The Friday Face-Off: Romantic

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme: “Thus with a kiss I die.” – A romantic cover

I went back and forth with this week’s theme, I just couldn’t figure out which direction to take. I changed my mind at least three times. But I finally settled on a book with an unusual love story that I read years ago, Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood. I wouldn’t say the covers are romantic, but I think it works for Valentine’s Day. Also bonus, it has a ton of cool covers, so I’ve chosen my favorites to highlight today. Take a look:

U.S. hardcover edition 2003 | Anchor Books edition 2004 | Finish edition 2010

Hungarian edition 2019 | Croatian 2015 | Danish edition 2011

German edition 2003 | French edition 2007 | Romanian edition 2008

Greek edition 2014 | Portuguese 2018 | Swedish edition 2004

Turkish edition 2018 | Virago edition 2010 | Seal Books edition 2004

I knew immediately when I saw this cover that it would end up being my favorite, although I love a LOT of these. But I love the weird image and the simplicity of the Hungarian cover:

Which cover do you like best?

  1. I owned this book many years ago but never actually got round to reading it and I don’t think I even have a copy now! I like your choice, in fact I like quite a few of these. I particularly like the Anchor and Swedish covers.
    Lynn 😀

  2. Lol… what a delightfully quirky choice for this week, Tammy:)). My favourite is the German cover, because it is just so darned pretty! Which – as I recall – doesn’t exactly chime with the content of the book…

  3. Wow, these are all so different! I’m sort of curious now which one represents the content better, maybe? Or do they all? Even curioser, since they all feel like they could belong to different books. I think the Finnish edition is my favorite. I can’t even tell you why. It’s just lovely and catches my eye the best.

  4. I’ve heard good things about this book, but I don’t really like any of the covers? They just don’t do it for me haha. Tho if I had to pick I would pick Finish edition 2010

  5. Sarah

So part of what drew me to this book was the cover. (Hoping I can make time for it soon!) I think my favorite is the Anchor Books 2004 edition. I just love the colors and the lushness of the leaves.
