Future Fiction #59: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

I’m going big this week! Several big name, exciting Fall release cover reveals just hit the internets, and I just had to share them with you:-D

Lesson One of the Scholomance

Learning has never been this deadly

A Deadly Education is set at Scholomance, a school for the magically gifted where failure means certain death (for real) — until one girl, El, begins to unlock its many secrets. There are no teachers, no holidays, and no friendships, save strategic ones. Survival is more important than any letter grade, for the school won’t allow its students to leave until they graduate… or die! The rules are deceptively simple: Don’t walk the halls alone. And beware of the monsters who lurk everywhere. El is uniquely prepared for the school’s dangers. She may be without allies, but she possesses a dark power strong enough to level mountains and wipe out millions. It would be easy enough for El to defeat the monsters that prowl the school. The problem? Her powerful dark magic might also kill all the other students.

A Deadly Education (Scholomance #1) by Naomi Novik. Releases in October 2020 from Del Rey Books. Please forgive the EW branding on the cover. I HATE sharing books with it, but I simply could not wait for the logo to come off (although I realize the image on Goodreads doesn’t have the logo, but it’s way too small for me). A new Naomi Novik series?? I am so ready for this! Sounds like an adult version of Harry Potter, perhaps?

From the New York Times bestselling author of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, an intoxicating, hypnotic new novel set in a dreamlike alternative reality.

Piranesi’s house is no ordinary building: its rooms are infinite, its corridors endless, its walls are lined with thousands upon thousands of statues, each one different from all the others. Within the labyrinth of halls an ocean is imprisoned; waves thunder up staircases, rooms are flooded in an instant. But Piranesi is not afraid; he understands the tides as he understands the pattern of the labyrinth itself. He lives to explore the house.

There is one other person in the house-a man called The Other, who visits Piranesi twice a week and asks for help with research into A Great and Secret Knowledge. But as Piranesi explores, evidence emerges of another person, and a terrible truth begins to unravel, revealing a world beyond the one Piranesi has always known.

For readers of Neil Gaiman’s The Ocean at the End of the Lane and fans of Madeline Miller’s CircePiranesi introduces an astonishing new world, an infinite labyrinth, full of startling images and surreal beauty, haunted by the tides and the clouds.

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke. Releases in September 2020 from Bloomsbury. I find it interesting that these first two covers are so similar in style and color! Clarke wrote Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell years ago, which I read and honestly, I didn’t love it. But I wanted to share this because the book world has been waiting fourteen years for Clarke’s next book! I think this sounds a bit odd, so I’m not sure if it’s going to be my cup of tea, but I’m very curious none the less.

A genre-bending romance where The 100 meets a Miyazaki-inspired fantasy world, in which the prince of a hi-tech city in the sky falls into a goddess’s ancient land ruled by magicians and prophecy. The first book in the YA duology is scheduled for fall 2020.

The Other Side of the Sky (The Other Side of the Sky #1) by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner. Releases in Septebmer 2020 from HarperTeen. A new series from mega-duo Kaufman & Spooner! It’s a bit unusual to have the cover revealed but not the entire story blurb, but that’s all I could find. I’m tempted as I really loved These Broken Stars, and I have to say the cat on the cover is making me VERY curious:-D Plus, what a pretty cover!

I agree- the Clarke book sounds really strange. Intriguing, but strange. I have yet to read a Novik book, but it’s cool that she’s appealing to adult HP fans.

  2. Susanna Clark ! SUSANNA CLARK!! Good grief. This post should come with a health warning *Klaxon* make sure you’re seated before opening. I can’t even. I loved Strange and Norrell and wondered whether we would have anything more from this author (I’m sure I read it took her about 10 years to complete). I am – well, I need to go and lie down.
Thank you – this has made my day.
Of course the other two look wonderful but SUSANNA CLARK!
    Lynn 😀

  3. I’m definitely interested in the Novik one. The Clarke one sounds interesting but I own Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell and have never started it because it seemed so dense. I love the cover of Other Side of the Sky!

  4. Oooo… A Deadly Education sounds FABULOUS! And I also like the sound of The Other Sound of the Sky. I, too, found Clarke’s writing style rather offputting – it was one of those rare occasions where I think the TV series is FAR better than the book, but I know she has a huge fanbase and I’m glad she has bought out another book…

  5. As I read the description of Piranesi I kept thinking this feels like Circe (which I just finished and loved), so I can see why they mentioned that. And The Ocean at the End of the Lane is one of my favorites. Not sure if I’ll enjoy this one, but I like what I’ve seen enough to add it to my TBR. One of these days I also want to read Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. I never knew how long it was until I got a paperback copy. It’s a doorstop! Maybe that’s why I haven’t started it yet… 🙂

I think a lot of readers thought Jonathan Strange was just too long. But her new one sounds really interesting and I would love to give it a go:-)

  6. Oooh, I had no idea Naomi Novik had something new coming out! My gosh, it sounds so gooood. 😀 I’m obviously going to have to read Piranesi, because my brother-in-law has been nagging me to read her first book. I just saw The Other Side of the Sky for the first time on Goodreads today, too! I’m so excited. I’ll read anything and everything by Amie Kaufman. All three of these books have gone on my TBR, and yikes, I always know I’m in trouble when these posts come up! lol.

  7. So weird, I literally added Naomi Novik’s new book to my goodreads earlier this week because I saw a review of Spinning Silver on another blog and wondered what she was up to next…and saw Deadly Education! I couldn’t find a non-EW cover at the time either, but looks like one is available on GR now if you want to switch it out – I don’t know your preferred image size, but that one looks okay to me 🙂 I hate featuring watermarked covers too even though I understand why they have to do that.

It usually takes a week to find a good sized cover without the watermark, so I’ll definitely switch it out as soon as I can! I just don’t use Goodreads images for anything except Friday Face-Offs, so I’ll wait a bit:-)

I’ve not read any Naomi Novik before, but A Deadly Education does sound like it’s for the teenagers who grew up reading Harry Potter and looking for an explicitly adult ‘School of Magic’ book. Def adding this one to my TBR.

  9. The Captain

I am so excited for the clarke book!! And I didn’t know there was a new Novik coming out. I have to admit that the idea sounds fun but the name Scholomance is awkward and I don’t like it.

Ha ha, I have to agree, Scholomance is sort of weird. Maybe it makes more sense when you read the story?

  10. Many well known authors here! I didn’t like Uprooted but I am open to giving Novik another chance with her new book! I am hoping to read Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell this year. If it’s good I will have to check out this next one! And then I will be curious to see what you make of the Kaufman and Spooner novel.

  11. So intriguing to catch wind of the procedure! I realized it took a great deal to be a Les Mills educator however I didn’t understand exactly how included it was, all out regard for every one of those teachers.
