The Friday Face-Off: First Contact

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme: “Ack, Ack, Ack, we come in peace.”

I’m so happy that Rosewater has some awesome covers to share, because this is the first book that came to mind this week. Rosewater by Tade Thompson is the first book in a trilogy that takes place in a futuristic Nigeria and involves a strange, alien dome that has popped up in the city of Rosewater. Here are some of the covers I found:

Apex Book Company edition 2016 | Orbit Books edition 2018

Spanish edition 2019 | Russian edition 2019

French edition 2019 | Turkish edition 2019

This is a tough one. I have a soft spot for the Apex cover, simply because that’s the one I read, back in 2016. But it’s not my favorite cover. I think I’m giving the prize this week to the Spanish edition, simply because I love the large scope of the city and the dome looming over it.

But let me know, which one do you like best? Have you read Rosewater?

  1. I’m finding it hard to make up my mind – it’s a tie between the Orbit and French covers, I think. I did try this one, but rapidly DNF’d it, sadly.

  2. My favorite is the Spanish 2019 edition too! I still need to read this. I started it at one point and then had to put it down for other commitments but it seemed cool.

  3. Wow, I was only aware of those first two covers, I’m glad this book’s popularity has exploded 😀 I think my favorite is the Russian edition, because it so perfectly captures the creepiness of the winged woman.

  4. These covers are all so different from one another. I guess I expected something similar given it’s the same story. It’s interesting how different desginers see the book isn’t it? I think the french one is my favourite

Different countries see the book differently, I think. Or I should say different designers from different countries! It always amazes me too.

  5. I agree, and the Spanish cover certainly seems to fit the description of the story. But that Russian cover is also fascinating.
