The Friday Face-Off: 60s Sci-Fi #SciFiMonth

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme: “When a day that you happen to know is Wednesday starts off by sounding like Sunday, there is something seriously wrong somewhere.” – A cover that is 60s sci-fi.

And here it is, the last Friday Face-Off of #SciFiMonth 2019! It’s been fun focusing on science fiction, and to cap off the month, we’re highlighting covers with a 60s sci-fi vibe. I decided to choose a book written in 1968, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick, the classic that led to the making of the movie Blade Runner (in case you didn’t know, lol). The book is VERY different from the movie, and I highly recommend reading it if you haven’t. I bawled my eyes out!! This week I decided to challenge myself further by trying to stick with only covers that have that 60s vibe to them, although I did throw in some others that I really love. As you can imagine, there are HUNDREDS of different covers. Here is a small selection:

UK Edition 2010 | Phoenix edition 2012 | Polish edition 2011

Gollancz paperback 2007 | French edition 1979 | Signet edition 1969

Bantam Dell edition 2008 | Spanish edition (year?) | Finish edition 1989

Bulgarian edition 1994 | Panther Books edition 1977 | Polish edition 1995

Romanian edition 2017 | Panther Books edition 1972 | Doubleday edition 1968

I believe the last one is the original US cover. There are some weird covers, right? I’m not really in love with any of these, but if I had to choose, I really like the Panther 1972 edition. It’s disturbing yet clever:

Which is your favorite cover?

  1. This book certainly has some interesting covers! I had to read this one at university and I couldn’t get into it at all, but it seems to be one of those sci-fi books that’s as well-loved today as it was when it was released. I think my favourite is the Phoenix edition – it’s so pretty! I do quite like the French edition as well, though. I think it’s the bright colours.

  2. Oh my goodness – and I thought Chocky had a wide variation… There is certainly a range, here – and what an excellent choice for this week’s theme! My favourite is the SF Masterworks cover, which I think captures a real flavour of the book – along with the Spanish version, too.

I’m impressed you found so many 60s-Ish covers that look so different! It’s hard to pick a favorite since there are things I like about a few of them.

Of course trying to see which is my favorite I picked out all the more modern covers: romanian 2017 and Phoenix 2012. Favorite 60s cover is probably the Doubleday 1968.

  4. I’m embarrassed to say this is a book I’ve yet to read, even though I’ve had it on my shelf for many years and loved both movies. For the covers, I tend to lean most towards the Romanian edition, I like the feel of the cityscape.

  5. I have not read much 60’s sci-fi….I think *maybe* one short story. I need to rectify that! I haven’t read Philip K Dick but I do, of course, have some of his books in my tbr including this one. 🙂
