The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: A cover that is futuristic.
So many choices for this week’s theme! I decided to go with The Collapsing Empire by John Scalzi, a book I read a couple of years ago, and so it has a nice selection of covers to choose from. You can’t get much more “futuristic” than space ships and planets! Take a look:
U.S. Tor Books edition 2017 | Tor UK edition 2017
Spanish edition 2018 | German edition 2017
Italian edition 2017 | Thorndike Press (U.S.) edition 2017
I really like all of these, but my favorite is definitely the Italian edition. It’s so dynamic, and I love the movement.

I really like the German edition. That colour blue always gets me.
I love blues and greens, I’m kind of surprised I didn’t pick the German one!
Iβm torn between the Italian and the German version. I love the Italian version the but colors on the German One appeal to me just a little more I think. Great pick!
Yeah, the Italian colors are muted, but for some reason I still love the design.
I like the Tor UK edition but then I’m pretty partial to green. I’ve not read any Scalzi but have a book of Christmas tales I’m hoping to get to this December.
I have a lot more Scalzi to read, some day I’ll catch up with his work.
I’ve heard so many things about John Scalzi’s work, I need to check it out! I must admit I do love the Tor UK edition – I just can’t take my eyes off that bright, bright green and I’m always drawn to vibrant colours. π
I love that green too!
These are all beautiful covers, with maybe the exception of the one for the Spanish edition which looks more like the poster for a cartoon series for kids π
Ha ha, you’re right, that Spanish cover is a little juvenile!
This is perfect for this week. I love that Italian one, it feels exciting. I also like the German one a lot and I don’t mind the U.S. Tor, either. π
They are actually all pretty good covers. Scalzi got lucky!
Good choice this week! I actually like all the covers haha but I think the US, UK , and German covers are best
I also love the US and UK, such bright colors:-)
I’m always fascinated when these contain a book cover I have (though in this case haven’t read yet) to see if I’m always drawn to what’s familiar or whether I’ll just as often be drawn to a different great cover. I don’t know the answer to that but in this instance I’m most drawn to the one I have, the US Tor edition. I really want to read this series, but I have one or two more in the Old Man’s War series I want to read first.
I’ve only read this first book in the series, and the third comes out next year. I’d like to catch up, it’s a pretty good series!
Oh what a wonderful choice for this week! And I’m still not sure why it didn’t occur to me, given that I LOVE this series! I’m going to go with the US Tor edition. Not only do I love the artwork – that funky, eye-catching font nails it for me:).
You’re right, I love the font on the US cover as well:-)
I love your choice for this week, Tammy! I like the one you chose best and I also really like the bright green one. We just donβt have enough green covers!
Oh yes, I love the bright green as well!
I think I have to agree with the Italian one but I also like the US Tor one too. π
Me too, that’s my next favorite:-)
Wow, this one has more covers than I thought! I kinda dig the Spanish edition, it looks very retro π
I was surprised at all the covers too. And I didn’t even show all of them!
The US Tor one caught my eye immediately. Some of the others are good but that is still my favorite.
Yeah, I love those colors. That’s probably my second favorite.
I really like all of these too because they give me such a Star Wars vibe. π My favorites are the first one and the one you picked. I love the colors used in the first one and agree with you about the nice sense of movement in the Italian one.
I love the colors of the first one too:-)
I love your choice this week and your favourite. Such a great feeling of movement and use of light.
Lynn.
Love these covers. I really need to read this series!
