Future Fiction #46: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books #SciFiMonth

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

In celebration of #SciFiMonth, I’m dedicating the entire month to science fiction! Join me each Wednesday to see what new SF books I’ve found:-D

Anthropocene Rag is “a rare distillation of nanotech, apocalypse, and mythic Americana into a heady psychedelic brew.”—Nebula and World Fantasy award-winning author Jeffrey Ford

In the future United States, our own history has faded into myth and traveling across the country means navigating wastelands and ever-changing landscapes.

The country teems with monsters and artificial intelligences try to unpack their own becoming by recreating myths and legends of their human creators. Prospector Ed, an emergent AI who wants to understand the people who made him, assembles a ragtag team to reach the mythical Monument City.

In this nanotech Western, Alex Irvine infuses American mythmaking with terrifying questions about the future and who we will become.

Anthropocene Rag by Alex Irvine. Releases in March 2020 from Tor.com. This cover was revealed over a month ago, but I’m glad I saved sharing this book, because it’s a perfect choice for SciFiMonth! I love the description “nanotech Western”!

Ravaged by environmental disaster, greed and oppression, our planet is in crisis. The future of humanity hangs in the balance – and one woman can tip it over.

Despite increasing restrictions on the freedoms of women on Earth, Valerie Black is spearheading the first all-female mission to a planet in the Goldilocks Zone, where conditions are just right for human habitation.

It’s humanity’s last hope for survival, and Naomi, Valerie’s surrogate daughter and the ship’s botanist, has been waiting her whole life for an opportunity like this – to step out of Valerie’s shadow and really make a difference.

But when things start going wrong on the ship, Naomi starts to suspect that someone on board is concealing a terrible secret – and realises time for life on Earth may be running out faster than they feared . . .

This is Station Eleven meets The Martian – a bold and thought-provoking new high-concept thriller.

Goldilocks by Laura Lam. Releases in April 2020 from Headline (UK). I’m cheating a bit with this and sharing the UK cover, because I’m so impatient! I’m super excited for this book, and I believe Orbit will be publishing this in the U.S. around the same time next year. I didn’t want to wait for the U.S. cover reveal, so I thought I’d share this. I mean, “Station Eleven meets The Martian“???

A blend of searing social commentary and speculative fiction, Chana Porter’s fresh, pointed debut is perfect for fans of Jeff VanderMeer and Carmen Maria Machado.

Trina Goldberg-Oneka is a fifty-year-old trans woman whose life is irreversibly altered in the wake of a gentle—but nonetheless world-changing—invasion by an alien entity called The Seep. Through The Seep, everything is connected. Capitalism falls, hierarchies and barriers are broken down; if something can be imagined, it is possible.

Trina and her wife, Deeba, live blissfully under The Seep’s utopian influence—until Deeba begins to imagine what it might be like to be reborn as a baby, which will give her the chance at an even better life. Using Seeptech to make this dream a reality, Deeba moves on to a new existence, leaving Trina devastated.

Heartbroken and deep into an alcoholic binge, Trina follows a lost boy she encounters, embarking on an unexpected quest. In her attempt to save him from The Seep, she will confront not only one of its most avid devotees, but the terrifying void that Deeba has left behind. A strange new elegy of love and loss, The Seep explores grief, alienation, and the ache of moving on.

The Seep by Chana Porter. Releases in January 2020 from Soho Press. This gorgeous cover was the first thing to catch my eye, but after reading the blurb I have to say I’m intrigued. The story sounds unusual but in a good way.

I agree, I’m excited for Goldilocks! I do love Laura Lam and I’m anxious to read another of her books.

  1. Sarah

These are all 3 fantastic sounding. I’ve been excited about The Seep for a while, but have not heard of these others.

Anthropocene Rag sounds like Fallout with more thought, and Goldilocks just sounds perfect (although I do hope we get to see some planets in the Goldilocks zone?).

    Fantastic picks as always Tammy!

I’ve been having some spam issues, so I’m going to keep a close eye on it in case that’s where your comment went. Sorry!

  2. These all look good but I’ll definitely keep an eye out for the Lam book. I’ve not read this author and so this could be maybe a starting point.
