The Friday Face-Off: Scream

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme: “It’s your favorite scary movie, remember? He had on the white mask, he stalked the babysitters.” – A cover featuring a scream.

I’m on a Stephen King roll, and luckily my choice this week, Pet Semetary, has one cover (at least) with someone screaming. Maybe this would have fit better with a theme like “cat,” but hey, I’m going with it! Here are a few of the many, many covers out there:

U.S. Scribner edition 2014 | U.S. Doubleday edition 1983 | Turkish edition 2003

Polish edition 2009 | UK edition 2010 | Romanian edition 2015

Turtleback Books edition (English) 2001 | Chinese edition 2005 | Portuguese edition 1989

Russian edition 2016 | Dutch edition 2008 | German edition (year?)

To be honest, I’m not crazy about any of these covers. I mean, what’s up with that German edition?? Lol. Also, the Portuguese cover is seriously weird. I guess for pure WTF-ery, I’m going with the Chinese edition. I have no idea what’s going on, but I like it for some reason:

Let me know which cover you like best!

I liked the Chinese cover best too! Although I have to admit, I’m surprised King has been translated to Chinese, and all these covers are delightfully creepy.

  2. Great choice for this week. I almost went with King too but the book I had in mind was one I hadn’t read so carried on looking for one I’d checked out. Your favourite is definitely a crazy cover. Hectic even?

  3. Oh wow I must admit I’m not really a fan of any of these! I do find a lot of horror covers don’t call to me, though, which is kind of interesting when I think about it – I wonder what it is about horror designs that don’t appeal to me. The Chinese cover is certainly interesting, though – it has a kind of Tales from the Crypt vibe? – but my favourite is probably the UK 2010 edition just because it’s the one I’m most familiar with. 😀

  4. So I was about to say what is up with that Chinese edition? How funny. I think there are a lot of good ones here but I think my fave is 2010 UK Edition and the Polish edition. And I also have to say that the Portuguese edition is VERY disturbing. If I didn’t know what the book was about, there’s no way I’d want a book of a kid carrying a dead cat. I also have to mention that I think the Russian one would make a good cozy mystery cover.

That Russian cover is definitely more tame than some of the others, and I can see “cozy mystery” when I look at it:-)

  5. Yes, the Chinese edition does not bear any resemblance to the subject matter, but on the other hand it features some scream-worthy images and, in the upper portion, an actually screaming character so… it’s perfect for this week! 😉

I was amazed the scream cover is the first one I saw, otherwise I never would have picked this book:-)

  6. Oh, I like that Chinese edition, too, but I’m especially drawn to the ones with cats because the very first edition of this book I remember as a child had a cat on it, and I wanted my mom to buy it for me because of that!

  7. That Turkish edition cracks me up because it looks just like the evil eyes of my sister’s cat…. The German edition is seriously odd, I have to agree. The Chinese one is so weird, but definitely grabs my attention! I don’t mind the Romanian one and the Polish one is actually a bit spooky!
