Future Fiction #42: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Two new YA fantasy cover reveals, and a Tor.com fantasy. It’s fantasy week!

A debut fantasy duology pitched as The Phantom of the Opera meets Moulin Rouge, the story follows Hellfire House’s star showgirl who, haunted by a dark past, must enter a magician’s competition in order to secure her freedom from the handsome, enigmatic keeper of the club, even as mysterious accidents seem to plague her every move.

Where Dreams Descend (Kingdom of Cards #1) by Janella Angeles. Releases in June 2020 from Wednesday Books. This is the prettiest cover ever. I know the blurb is pretty short, but I love the idea of a Phantom of the Opera retelling, and the phrase “magician’s competition” has me very curious!

A fast-paced, well-plotted fantasy retelling of an ancient Scottish fairy tale ballad, this exciting debut will appeal to fans of Stephanie Garber’s CARAVAL, Shea Ernshaw’s THE WICKED DEEP, and Kendare Blake’s THREE DARK CROWNS.

Every year on Walpurgis Night, Caldella’s Witch Queen lures a young boy back to her palace. An innocent life to be sacrificed on the full moon to keep the island city from sinking.

Convinced her handsome brother is going to be taken, sixteen-year-old Lina Kirk enlists the help of the mysterious Tomas Lin, her secret crush, and the only boy to ever escape from the palace. Working together they protect her brother, but draw the Queen’s attention. When the Queen spirits Tomas away instead, Lina blames herself and determines to go after him.

Caught breaking into the palace, the Queen offers Lina a deal: she will let Tomas go, if, of course, Lina agrees to take his place. Lina accepts, with a month before the full moon, surely she can find some way to escape. But the Queen is nothing like she envisioned, and Lina is not at all what the Queen expected. Against their will, they find themselves falling for each other. As water floods Caldella’s streets and the dark tide demands its sacrifice, they must choose who to save: themselves, each other, or the island city relying on them both.

The Dark Tide (The Dark Tide #1) by Alicia Jasinska. Releases in June 2020 from Sourcebooks Fire. Another beautiful cover reveal! I don’t think I’ve ever run across a retelling of a Scottish fairy tale, so I’m very much looking forward to this.

In a small Western Queensland town, a reserved young woman receives a note from one of her vanished brothers—a note that makes question her memories of their disappearance and her father’s departure.

A beguiling story that proves that gothic delights and uncanny family horror can live—and even thrive—under a burning sun, Flyaway introduces readers to Bettina Scott, whose search for the truth throws her into tales of eerie dogs, vanished schools, cursed monsters, and enchanted bottles.

In these pages Jennings assures you that gothic delights, uncanny family horror, and strange, unsettling prose can live—and even thrive—under a burning sun.

Holly Black describes as “half mystery, half fairy tale, all exquisitely rendered and full of teeth.” Flyaway enchants you with the sly, beautiful darkness of Karen Russell and a world utterly its own.

Flyaway by Kathleen Jennings. Releases in July 2020 from Tor.com. This is the week of pretty covers, right? This cover was revealed about a month ago, but I just had to share it.  I’ve been having great luck with Tor.com titles lately, and I’m very excited for this one!

  1. All of these covers and blurbs are amazing- but I’m especially excited about The Phantom of the Opera one… it’s giving me some Night Circus vibes. Great picks this week!

  2. Tor.com always has great releases. I’m planning a few new features for the blogs next year and seriously, I may have to do a “I discovered at Books Bones & Buffy” segment. Just added all three of these. The last one’s cover really spooks me. Initially I thought “how pretty” and then I was like “wait! That’s a human heart!”

LOL, Ok now I’m curious about that feature! Ha ha. I know, that heart sort of sneaks up on you, I didn’t notice it at first either!

It does sound really good! I love the Phantom of the Opera anyway, so I’m hoping it’s a really good retelling:-)

Flyaway is such a lovely cover, actually they all are. I definitely chose books this week with my eyeballs, lol.

  3. Wow, the first two are new to me, and while I really should be more careful with adding YA seeing as how many times I’ve crashed and burned with the genre this year, I can’t help but want to check these out!

  4. The Jennings book is calling to me. Gothic goodness and at first it almost sounded like it had retelling potential for the Six Swans fairytale although probably not.
