Future Fiction #41: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Orbit wins the cover reveal prize this week, with a total of four entries (see below), and a new book from Christina Henry is always exciting, take a look:

The first in a gripping new trilogy, The Book of Koli charts the journey of one unforgettable young boy struggling to find his place in a chilling post-apocalyptic world. Perfect for readers of Station Eleven and Annihilation.

Beyond the walls of the small village of Mythen Rood lies an unrecognizable world. A world where overgrown forests are filled with choker trees and deadly vines and seeds that will kill you where you stand. And if they don’t get you, one of the dangerous shunned men will.

Koli has lived in Mythen Rood his entire life. He knows the first rule of survival is that you don’t venture beyond the walls.

What he doesn’t know is — what happens when you aren’t given a choice?

The Book of Koli (Rampart Trilogy #1) by M.R. Carey. Releases in April 2020 from Orbit Books. I’m not sure how this book escaped my notice, but I literally just found out about it. In case you don’t visit this blog on a regular basis, you might not know that M.R. Carey is one of my very favorite authors. And adding his next book to my TBR is more of a reflex than anything else. Not only was this cover revealed, but the next two books in the series were revealed at the same time. Pretty cool, I don’t think I’ve ever seen this done before, and of course I have to share all three covers:-D Cover art & photography by Lisa Marie Pompilio & Blake Morrow.

Teagan Frost’s life is finally back on track. Her role working for the government as a psychokinetic operative is going well and she might even be on course for convincing her crush to go out with her. But, little does she know, that sh*t is about to hit the fan . . .

A young boy with the ability to cause earthquakes has come to Los Angeles – home to the San Andreas, one of the most lethal fault lines in the world. If Teagan can’t stop him, the entire city – and the rest of California – could be wiped off the map.

Random Sh * t Flying Through the Air (The Frost Files #2) by Jackson Ford. Releases in June 2020 from Orbit Books. And lookie here, a sequel I’m dying to read! I had so much fun with Ford’s first book, The Girl Who Could Move Sh*t with her Mind, and I’m excited for this story to continue. Cover designed by Sophie Harris & Steve Panton.

In four new novellas, Christina Henry returns to the universe she created for Alice and Red Queen, where magic runs more freely than anyone suspects, but so do secrets and blood.

Lovely Creature
In the New City lives a girl called Elizabeth, a girl who has a secret: she can do magic. But someone knows Elizabeth’s secret–someone who has a secret of his own. That secret is a butterfly that lives in a jar, a butterfly made by a girl called Alice.

Girl in Amber
Alice and Hatcher are just looking for a place to rest. Alice has been dreaming of a cottage by a lake and a field of wildflowers, but while walking blind in a snowstorm they stumble into a castle that seems empty and abandoned…at least until nightfall.

When I First Came to Town
Hatcher wasn’t always Hatcher. Once, he was a boy called Nicholas, and Nicholas fancied himself the best fighter in the Old City. No matter who fought him he always won. Then his boss tells him he’s going to battle the fearsome Grinder, a man who never leaves his opponents alive.

The Mercy Seat
Alice has a secret–a secret that not even Hatcher knows yet, but pretty soon she won’t be able to keep it from him.

Looking Glass (The Chronicles of Alice) by Christina Henry. Releases in April 2020 from Ace Books. I loved Alice, the first book in Henry’s dark retelling of Alice in Wonderland, and even though I’m sorry to say I still haven’t read the second book in the series, Red Queen, I am definitely picking up these novellas.

Me either!! I was in shock when I saw it on Edelweiss. I’m usually more on top of things but oh well:-)

He’s such a good writer. I think I still love The Girl with all the Gifts the best, but I’ve really enjoyed everything Carey has written:-)

Aren’t they? Really fun books, too. In the fire book he tackled the California brush fires, now he’s going after earthquakes in the next book:-)

  1. DYING for the M R Carey book! I really loved The Girl in Red, but haven’t read any of Christina Henry’s Alice books. For whatever reason, Alice retellings never really call to me, but I wonder if I should make an exception.

And she has another book on the horizon out next year too! I can’t remember the title at the moment, but I’m so excited:-)

  2. Ooo… I love the sound of the new Carey:)). Thank you for sharing allll these – but that’s the one which has me bouncing in the chair with excitement.

  3. With the first one, you had me at post-apocalyptic dystopia. <3 Yes, please! I don't think I've ever seen all the covers revealed at the same time, either, but that's pretty neat.

OMG JACKSON FORD'S BOOK 2 HAS A COVER NOW?! I've been so eager to read this. I cannot wait. I can't even believe I missed the cover reveal. I'm so out of touch. June feels too far away. D:

I missed the cover reveal too!! But I’m so happy, I can hardly wait to read Ford’s next book, so much fun:-)

  4. Not heard of two of those, but they sound interesting. I really need to try Alice by Christina Henry even though I am not a Wonderland fan I think her book might be cool. I liked Lost Boys by her.

I’m not usually an Alice in Wonderland fan either, but she changes up the story and makes it very modern.

  5. Yay, I knew you’d be featuring The Book of Koli too this week! I also saw the new Christina Henry, and was excited until I found out it was a collection, and you know how I am with short fiction lol. I love that world though, so I’ll probably still check it out!

  6. I am beyond excited for Christina Henry’s Looking Glass! I’ve loved everything she’s written, especially Alice (I need to read Red Queen still, too!), so this is a must-read. The Book of Koli also sounds incredible, definitely checking that one out!

  7. I am SO excited for the new Carey trilogy but I didn’t catch the other two book covers so that’s awesome! Interesting how they opted to do that… I don’t think the books are all being closely released together which is when publishers tend to do that.
