Future Fiction #40: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

More new cover reveals to get excited about, take a look:

She answered the Emperor’s call.

She arrived with her arts, her wits, and her only friend.

In victory, her world has turned to ash.

After rocking the cosmos with her deathly debut, Tamsyn Muir continues the story of the penumbral Ninth House in Harrow the Ninth, a mind-twisting puzzle box of mystery, murder, magic, and mayhem. Nothing is as it seems in the halls of the Emperor, and the fate of the galaxy rests on one woman’s shoulders.

Harrowhark Nonagesiumus, the last necromancer of the Ninth House, has been drafted by her Emperor to fight an unwinnable war. Side by side with a detested rival, Harrow must perfect her skills and become an angel of undeath—but her health is failing, her sword makes her nauseous and even her mind is threatening to betray her.

Sealed in the gothic gloom of the Emperor’s Mithraeum with three unfriendly teachers, hunted by the mad ghost of a murdered planet, Harrow must confront two unwelcome questions: is somebody trying to kill her? And if they succeeded, would the universe be better off?

Harrow the Ninth (The Ninth House #2) by Tamsyn Muir. Releases in June 2020 from Tor.com. If you missed the cover reveal earlier this week, then you were probably hiding under a rock. Muir continues her wildly popular Gideon the Ninth series next Summer, and I couldn’t love this cover more. Harrow takes the reins this time around, and I have to say I’m pretty excited to see what happens next! Fabulous cover art by Tommy Arnold.

A magical island. A dangerous task. A burning secret.

Linus Baker leads a quiet, solitary life. At forty, he lives in a tiny house with a devious cat and his old records. As a Case Worker at the Department in Charge Of Magical Youth, he spends his days overseeing the well-being of children in government-sanctioned orphanages.

When Linus is unexpectedly summoned by Extremely Upper Management he’s given a curious and highly classified assignment: travel to Marsyas Island Orphanage, where six dangerous children reside: a gnome, a sprite, a wyvern, an unidentifiable green blob, a were-Pomeranian, and the Antichrist. Linus must set aside his fears and determine whether or not they’re likely to bring about the end of days.

But the children aren’t the only secret the island keeps. Their caretaker is the charming and enigmatic Arthur Parnassus, who will do anything to keep his wards safe. As Arthur and Linus grow closer, long-held secrets are exposed, and Linus must make a choice: destroy a home or watch the world burn.

An enchanting story, masterfully told, The House in the Cerulean Sea is about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place—and realizing that family is yours.

The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune. Releases in March 2020 from Tor Books. I think I first heard about T.J. Klune from author K.D. Edwards on Twitter, but I’m not a hundred percent sure. (K.D. will let me know!) In any case, when a writer I love enthusiastically recommends another author, what’s a girl to do but add his books to the TBR? This story sounds AMAZING. Cover art by Chris Sickels.

Raise. Your. Phantom.

In a world on the brink of the next Great Dying, no amount of training can prepare us for what is to come…

A young heir will raise the most powerful phantom in all of Baiseen.
A dangerous High Savant will do anything to control the nine realms.
A mysterious and deadly Mar race will steal children into the sea.
And a handsome guide with far too many secrets will make me fall in love.

My name is Ash. A lowly scribe meant to observe and record. And yet I think I’m destined to save us all.

Crown of Bones by A.K. Wilder. Releases in March 2020 from Entangled Teen. I don’t always have great luck with Entangled Teen books, but I had to share this because a) the cover! and b) the story!

  1. All these covers are fabulous but I especially love the Crown of Bones one. The description is throwing me off a little. A lot of stuff in there that seems to need context. The Mar race? The next Great Dying?! I’m not sure how I feel about it.

Yeah, so that’s an Entangled Teen book, a publisher that I usually have bad luck with. So who knows, but I do love the cover:-)

      • Yeah I don’t think I’ve ever gotten approved for any of there stuff. I don’t even bother with them anymore. But still! If you enjoy it it might be worth picking up.

  2. I saw the Harrow cover this week and almost featured it but didn’t because I haven’t read the first one yet. I can only imagine the physical book and please someone tell me it’s going to have sprayed edges as well. I also stumbled on The House in the Cerulean Sea this week and already added it to my wishlist. Great choices this week!

Yeah, I don’t think you’re alone. I did enjoy it but not the entire book. I still want to read the second book, though.

Gideon the Ninth was crazy! Definitely read it before Harrow the Ninth, though. There’s a LOT of world building:-)
