Future Fiction #38: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Last week was cover reveal mania! I had so many books to choose from, and it was very hard to narrow it down to three books this week. Take a look:

The fourth book in the thrilling Donovan sci-fi series returns to a treacherous alien planet where corporate threats and dangerous creatures imperil the lives of the colonists.

Where does one put a messianic cult of practicing cannibals? That becomes the question when Ashanti appears in Donovan’s skies. She was designed for no more than four years in space. It’s taken ten. The crew has sealed the transportees onto a single deck–and over the years, the few survivors down there have become monsters. Lead by the messiah, Batuhan, they call themselves the Unreconciled.

Supervisor Kalico Aguila settles them at remote Tyson Station. With the discovery of a wasting disease among the Unreconciled, it’s up to Kalico, Dya Simonov, and Mark Talbot to try and deal with the epidemic. Only Batuhan has plans of his own–and Kalico and her people are to be the main course.

Talina Perez has brokered an uneasy truce with the quetzal molecules that float in her blood. Now, she, young Kylee Simonov, a quetzal named Flute, and a clueless nobleman named Taglioni rush to save Kalico’s vanished party.

But as always, Donovan is playing its own deadly game. Lurking in the forest outside Tyson Base is an old and previously unknown terror that even quetzals fear. And it has already begun to hunt.

Unreconciled (The Donovan Trilogy #4) by W. Michael Gear. Releases in May 2020 from DAW Books. First, I know what you’re thinking. “Trilogy” and “#4” are contradictory! But I couldn’t be happier that Gear’s “Trilogy” is continuing. Unreconciled isn’t listed on Goodreads as part of his Donovan series, which means someone entered this book incorrectly and it really needs to be fixed. Nevertheless, let’s all admire the gorgeous cover which goes perfectly with the rest of the series!

An epic tale of revenge and redemption in a world where a memory thief must fight against terrifying monarchs bent on the destruction of her people.

When the royal family of Puerto Leones sets out to destroy magic through a grand and terrible inquisition, spy and memory-thief Renata seeks to kill the prince, leader of the King’s Justice, who plans to use a terrible new weapon to wipe out the magic of the Moria…

For fans who enjoyed the ferocity of Ember in the Ashes, INCENDIARY explores the double-edged sword of memory and the triumph of hope and love in the midst of fear and oppression.

Incendiary (Hollow Crown #1) by Zoraida Córdova. Releases in April 2020 from Disney-Hyperion.  Can we all just agree that this cover is STUNNING?? Everything about it makes me want to read this book. I’m sorry to say I’ve never read anything by Córdova, so hopefully this will be my first book of hers. Cover by Billelis.

In this epic standalone fantasy, the acclaimed author of the Queens of Renthia series introduces an imaginative new world in which a pair of strong and determined women risk their lives battling injustice, corruption, and deadly enemies in their quest to become monster racing champions.

Life, death, and rebirth — in Becar, everyone knows that who you are in this life will determine what you are in your next life. The augurs can read your fate in your aura: hawk, heron, tortoise, jackal, human. Armed with that knowledge, you can change your destiny with the choices you make, both in this life and your next. But for the darkest individuals, there is no redemption: you come back as a kehok, a monster, and you will always be a kehok for the rest of time.

Unless you can win the Races.

As a professional trainer, Tamra was an elite kehok rider. Then a tragic accident on the track shattered her confidence, damaged her career, and left her nearly broke. Now Tamra needs the prize money to prevent the local temple from taking her daughter away from her, and that means she must once again find a winning kehok . . . and a rider willing to trust her.

Raia is desperate to get away from her domineering family and cruel fiancé. As a kehok rider, she could earn enough to buy her freedom. But she can’t become good enough to compete without a first-rate trainer.

Impressed by the inexperienced young woman’s determination, Tamra hires Raia and pairs her with a strange new kehok with the potential to win — if he can be tamed.

But in this sport, if you forget you’re riding on the back of a monster, you die. Tamra and Raia will work harder than they ever thought possible to win the deadly Becaran Races — and in the process, discover what makes this particular kehok so special.

Race the Sands by Sarah Beth Durst. Releases in April 2020 from Harper Voyager. Does this sound amazing or what? That blurb is rather long, I think, but it’s got me very excited to read Durst’s upcoming standalone fantasy. And take a look at the monster/lion on the cover, that detail is simply gorgeous.

  1. WOW. Incendiary has an AHMAZING cover and that premise sounds so intriguing. It totally snatched me from the beginning and I kind of want to read it now 🙂 Rebel of the Sands caught my eye too but I want to wait for more reviews before I pick that one up. Great post x

  2. I still need to start the Donovan series. I really have no excuse because it sounds perfect for me. Incendiary’s cover is gorgeous and the blurb is very enticing.

I also was really excited when I saw Race the Sands on EW earlier in the week! All great picks!

  3. All of these look and sound great. I’m so far behind on the Donovan series – must catch up! The covers for that one never disappoint. They’ve all been consistently good. The 3rd one bothered me a tad, but it has grown on me. I am really digging that lion creature as well!

Yeah, I love the Donovan covers, and I’m glad the designers are sticking with the same overall design for the series.

  4. Oh wow- that cover for Unreconciled is wild. All the covers for that series have been pretty awesome though.

Race The Sands looks amazing too!

  5. Ooooh I’m entranced by that cover for Incendiary, looks amazing! Also, I really need to make an effort to read Sarah Beth Durst at some point. There continues to be too many great books coming out lol.

  6. Wow, these are all stunning looking books, I could look at these covers for ever although that wouldn’t get all the books read would it!
All the covers for the Michael Wear books have been amazing – it’s a series I really would like to get onto at some point although obviously I’m not very behind.
Incendiary – I’d not heard of that one before but the cover and premise are fantastic. And I love the sound of the Durst book too. Too many books but good problems to have.

  7. I’ve been meaning to pick up the Donovan series, but I haven’t had a chance yet. But Unreconciled looks interesting, and I’ve always thought all his covers were really neat. I’m so into the bones/skeleton aesthetic. Incendiary has a freaking GORGEOUS cover, too! I’ve seen Race The Sands, and it looks so interesting, but I’m not quite sure yet if it’s for me. I’m a wuss who’s waiting to see what others think before I decide either way.
