Future Fiction #37: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Three new books spotted this week!

Once upon a time, a demon who desired earthly domination fathered an army of dark daughters to help him corrupt humanity . . .

As children, Goldie, Liyana, Scarlet, and Bea dreamed of a strange otherworld: a nightscape of mists and fog, perpetually falling leaves and hungry ivy, lit by an unwavering moon. Here, in this shadowland of Everwhere, the four girls, half-sisters connected by blood and magic, began to nurture their elemental powers together. But at thirteen, the sisters were ripped from Everwhere and separated. Now, five years later, they search for one another and yearn to rediscover their unique and supernatural strengths. Goldie (earth) manipulates plants and gives life. Liyana (water) controls rivers and rain. Scarlet (fire) has electricity at her fingertips. Bea (air) can fly.

To realize their full potential, the blood sisters must return to the land of their childhood dreams. But Everwhere can only be accessed through certain gates at 3:33 A.M. on the night of a new moon. As Goldie, Liyana, Scarlet, and Bea are beset with the challenges of their earthly lives, they must prepare for a battle that lies ahead. On their eighteenth birthday, they will be subjected to a gladiatorial fight with their father’s soldiers. If they survive, they will face their father who will let them live only if they turn dark. Which would be fair, if only the sisters knew what was coming.

So, they have thirty-three days to discover who they truly are and what they can truly do, before they must fight to save themselves and those they love.

The Sisters Grimm by Menna van Praag. Releases in March 2020 from Harper Voyager. Isn’t this cover beautiful?? I also love the sound of this story.

Long ago, a magical war destroyed an empire, and a new one was built in its ashes. But still the old grudges simmer, and two siblings will fight on opposite sides to save their world, in the start of Django Wexler’s new epic fantasy trilogy.

Ashes of the Sun by Django Wexler. Releases in Summer 2020 from Orbit Books. This cover was recently revealed by Barnes & Noble, and although that blurb is extremely brief (for now), I’m still excited for this trilogy. Cover art by Scott M. Fischer.

A young pilot risks everything to save his best friend–the man he trusts most and might even love–only to learn that he’s secretly the heir to a brutal galactic empire.

Ettian Nassun’s life was shattered when the merciless Umber Empire invaded. He’s spent seven years putting himself back together under its rule, joining an Umber military academy and becoming the best pilot in his class. Even better, he’s met Gal Veres–his exasperating and infuriatingly enticing roommate who’s made the Academy feel like a new home.

But when dozens of classmates spring an assassination plot on Gal, a devastating secret comes to light: Gal is the heir to the Umber Empire. Ettian barely manages to save his best friend and flee the compromised Academy unscathed, rattled both that Gal stands to inherit the empire that broke him and that there are still people willing to fight back against Umber rule. As they piece together a way to deliver Gal safely to his throne, Ettian finds himself torn in half by an impossible choice. Does he save the man who’s won his heart and trust that Gal’s goodness could transform the empire? Or does he throw his lot in with the brewing rebellion and fight to take back what’s rightfully theirs?

Bonds of Brass (Bonds of Brass #1) by Emily Skrutskie. Releases in April 2020 from Del Rey Books. I read Skrutskie’s The Abyss Surrounds Us several years ago and really enjoyed it. I’m curious to see what she does with space opera!

I’d heard of the last two, but Sisters Grim is totally new to me and sounds AMAZING! Gorgeous cover, too. Great finds again! 😀

  2. I think The Sisters Grimm sounds wonderful and I can see me picking it up someday – that cover alone! Don’t know about the other two but it’s not like you haven’t already stacked my TBR to overflowing!

    • Tammy

This is a new to me author, but knowing you’ve already heard of her makes me even more excited for the book:-)

  3. This is a fantastic trio of covers! And I love the sound of all three of them. Especially the Wexler one. I tried his Ten Thousand names in the past and wasn’t a huge fan… maybe this one will be more my speed?

    • Tammy

Interesting, I’ve heard really good things about Ten Thousand Names, but I haven’t read it myself so I can’t really say. I’m going to try his new one for sure!

    • Tammy

It sounds good, doesn’t it? And I hear nothing but great things about Wexler, maybe we can both read him soon:-)

    • Tammy

I’m glad I could tempt you:-) I haven’t read Wexler either, so I’m going to make a point for this to be my first.

  4. I need to stop reading these posts, because I always add one or two books to my TBR when I do. xD If you get anonymous hate mail, it’s probably my TBR just being a little shady, no worries. 😛

I stumbled across The Sisters Grimm last week, too, and it sounds sooo good! Definitely one of the books I’m more looking forward to in 2020. I know absolutely nothing about Django Wexler and his writing, but that is one freaking awesome name and now I want a whole series where Django Wexler is the protagonist. xD Bonus points if the series is really just him dealing with daily struggles, but conflating it to be this massive action-packed adventure. Ashes in the Sun does sound interesting, too, so I’ll have to keep an eye out for that.
