Future Fiction #29: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Three new covers spotted this week!

A forest, besieged. A queen, unyielding. Fans of Leigh Bardugo and Holly Black will devour this deliciously dark Eastern European–inspired YA fantasy debut.

When the Golden Dragon descended on the forest of Kamiena, a horde of monsters followed in its wake.

Ren, the forest’s young queen, is slowly losing her battle against them. Until she rescues Lukasz—the last survivor of a heroic regiment of dragon slayers—and they strike a deal. She will help him find his brother, who vanished into her forest… if Lukasz promises to slay the Dragon.

But promises are all too easily broken.

Don’t Call the Wolf by Aleksandra Ross. Releases in April 2020 from HarperTeen.  I’m loving this cover, and I’m also loving the fact that there is a dragon in this story. I’ll admit the Holly Black comparison is what initially grabbed me!

Debut author Sarah Kozloff offers a breathtaking and cinematic epic fantasy of a ruler coming of age in A Queen in Hiding, and all four books will be published within a month of each other, so you can binge your favorite new fantasy series.

Exiled and hunted, Cerulia, Princess of Weirandale, knows she has one destiny.

Her enemies failed to kill her, and no one harboring her is safe. Raised in obscurity, she has no resources, no army, nothing that can help her against her enemies.

Except their gods.

A Queen in Hiding (The Nine Realms #1) by Sarah Kozloff. Releases in January 2020 from Tor Books. A very short blurb that doesn’t tell you much, but I’m intrigued. I’m also curious about all four books in the series being released over the course of four months!

You are alone in the woods, seen only by the unblinking yellow moon. Your hands are empty. You are nearly naked.

And the wolf is angry.

Since her grandmother became her caretaker when she was four years old, Bisou Martel has lived a quiet life in a little house in Seattle. She’s kept mostly to herself. She’s been good. But then comes the night of homecoming, when she finds herself running for her life over roots and between trees, a fury of claws and teeth behind her. A wolf attacks. Bisou fights back. A new moon rises. And with it, questions. About the blood in Bisou’s past and on her hands as she stumbles home. About broken boys and vicious wolves. About girls lost in the woods—frightened, but not alone.

Elana K. Arnold, National Book Award finalist and author of the Printz Honor book Damsel, returns with a dark, engrossing, blood-drenched tale of the familiar threats to female power—and one girl’s journey to regain it.

Red Hood by Elana K. Arnold. Releases in February 2020 from Balzer + Bray. Having just read a Little Red Riding Hood retelling, I am eager for another one! This sounds really good:-D

  1. I had never seen the cover of (or, heard of) A Queen in Hiding before, and the choice the publisher made regarding release dates really is unusual. I’m not sure it’s my kind of fantasy – the synopsis is really vague and only reminds me of some YA books, even though this shouldn’t be one – but now I am intrigued. And the cover of Don’t Call the Wolf is so pretty!

  2. Well, you know I’m all for Red Wolf. However you totally grabbed me with the other two as well. I’m super curious about The Queen of Hiding. Not only does it have one of the best covers I’ve seen lately – 4 books in 4 months. And when I just added it to Goodreads, I saw this first one is almost 500 pages. That could be an epic series if they all clock in like that. Once again, some great finds Tammy. Hope you’re enjoying ComicCon!

I didn’t realize I had chosen two wolf books, but hey maybe they’re going to be a thing next year:-)

  3. I too find the concept and idea for A Queen in Hiding to be fascinating! Especially that last line about the gods 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

  4. The cover of Red Hood is awesome! Tho the synopsis seems to be a modern retelling which doesn’t quite fit with what I thought the cover implied :/

  5. Red Hood sounds amazing! And that cover. Definitely goona get it. And the other one, with all four books releasing over a few months, has me super intrigued also!

I love that too, an accelerated release schedule, and especially if the first book is really good!

I think all the books in the series are already written. I actually saw all four covers at Comic Con!
