Future Fiction #26: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

A couple of exciting cover reveals, and a new-to-me upcoming U.S. release!

Someone, or something, is haunting the Titanic.

This is the only way to explain the series of misfortunes that have plagued the passengers of the ship from the moment they set sail: mysterious disappearances, sudden deaths. Now suspended in an eerie, unsettling twilight zone during the four days of the liner’s illustrious maiden voyage, a number of the passengers – including millionaires Madeleine Astor and Benjamin Guggenheim, the maid Annie Hebbley and Mark Fletcher – are convinced that something sinister is going on . . . And then, as the world knows, disaster strikes.

Years later and the world is at war. And a survivor of that fateful night, Annie, is working as a nurse on the sixth voyage of the Titanic’s sister ship, the Britannic, now refitted as a hospital ship. Plagued by the demons of her doomed first and near fatal journey across the Atlantic, Annie comes across an unconscious soldier she recognises while doing her rounds. It is the young man Mark. And she is convinced that he did not – could not – have survived the sinking of the Titanic . . .

Brilliantly combining fact and fiction, the historical and the horrific, The Deep reveals a chilling truth in an unputdownable narrative full of unnerving moments and with a growing, inexorable sense of foreboding.

The Deep by Alma Katsu. Releases in March 2020 from G.P. Putnam’s Sons. I knew a couple of weeks ago that Alma was going to have a cover reveal for her next book, and I’m thrilled to finally share it! I’ve been a fan of hers since the beginning, and I was excited to see her career take off after the publication of The Hunger. Now she’s taking on a BIG story with her twisted version of what happened to the Titanic. I am beyond excited to read this! Horror fans take note! Also, such a lovely cover, right?

Welcome to Diamond City, where secret magic could save your life or get you killed.

Meet Aina Solís, whose wit is as sharp as her blade.

At twelve years old, Aina Solís was pulled off of the streets she slept on and trained to be one of the most feared assassins in Sumerand, a kingdom founded by immigrants and built by magic―and in recent years transformed by an industrial revolution. When Aina is given the most lucrative and dangerous job of her career―killing a wealthy industrialist named Kouta―she knows it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to leave her impoverished roots in her past once-and-for-all: the payout is enough to free her from under her boss Kohl’s thumb. But when the job goes wrong and Kouta escapes, she is left without a penny to her name and in the crosshairs of Kohl, who is eager to show the world what happens to those that fail him.

With Kohl on her heels, Aina is running out of time to find Kouta and finish what she started. But the closer she gets to killing him, the more she begins to ask the questions assassins are never meant to ask: who wants Kouta dead? And why? In a city full of half-constructed subway tunnels, hidden magical dens, secret weapons markets, and wolf-sized spiders, Aina discovers a conspiracy that could rewrite her city’s history and―if it isn’t stopped―sink her country into a catastrophic war.

Diamond City (Diamond City #1) by Francesca Flores. Releases in January 2020 from Wednesday Books. Here’s another cover that was just revealed, and the story sounds really good! I’m always up for assassin story lines, and I’m definitely keeping this on my radar.

Charlie is a dreamhacker, able to enter your dreams and mould their direction. Forget that recurring nightmare about being naked at an exam – Charlie will step in to your dream, bring you a dressing gown and give you the answers. As far as she knows, she’s the only person who can do this. Unfortunately, her power comes with one drawback – Charlie also has narcolepsy, and may fall asleep at the most inopportune moment.

But in London 2022, her skill is in demand. And when she is hired by a minor celebrity – who also happens to be the new girlfriend of Charlie’s lamented ex – who dreams of a masked Creeper then sleepwalks off a tall building, Charlie begins to realise that someone else might be able to invade dreams.

Sweet Dreams by Tricia Sullivan. Releases in July 2019 from Titan Books. I was just offered a review copy of this book and I thought I’d share it since this cover isn’t even up on Goodreads yet. This is the U.S. release of a book that’s been out in the UK for a couple of years, and I’m quite excited to read it! Also, the release date is next month so you won’t have to wait long:-)

There’s something about the Titanic that pulls me in, I’m just fascinated with it and everything that happened after. I’m so excited!

  1. These all look great and brace yourself…can you believe that I almost featured The Deep? I really want to read this one which I’m sure is a surprise to anyone who knows how I felt about The Hunger. I’m actually hoping that book was just a fluke to me and I want to give this author another chance. Here’s hoping that it’s just not The Hunger but underwater 🙂

I actually can’t believe it! Ha ha, I was thinking about you when I saw this cover. I think it’s going to be so different, that hopefully you’ll love it:-)

  2. The Deep sounds like a must for me! (Although I still haven’t read The Hunger… but I intend to!). Great choices! Sweet Dreams reminds me a little of a duology I read years ago about people who go to sleep in theaters so they can perform their dreams for the audience while they sleep. I may need to check this one out as well!

I’m really curious about Sweet Dreams, although sometimes books involving dreams don’t work for me. We’ll see…

    • Tammy

I agree, I loved the Hunger, and I thought she took that historical story and really did something interesting with it. I can only imagine what she’ll do with the Titanic!

  3. I and intrigued but leery at the same time of The Deep because I didn’t like The Hunger like you did, but it sounds so cool! The other two sound interesting as well!

    • Tammy

I remember you didn’t like The Hunger, but maybe this will be completely different:-)

Katsu is so good! I just love her lush style and her dangerous storylines. They really work for me:-)

    • Tammy

I have a copy of Occupy Me but still need to read it. I remember you enjoyed it, so I’m hoping Sweet Dreams works for me:-)

    • Tammy

I’m actually surprised no one has thought to make a horror story out of the Titanic event. Although who knows, maybe there are other books out there already but we don’t know about them:-)

  4. Excellent picks- as always. I love the sound of Diamond City and dreamhackers though. I hadn’t heard it before so thanks for putting it on the radar!

    • Tammy

I was excited when I stumbled upon Diamond City, it sounds like it will be a unique read:-)

  5. The Deep is new to me and I am already SO excited! I really loved her idea for The Hunger, so I’m excited to see what she does next with this one. Sweet Dreams and Diamond City are also new to me and sound incredible. You always feature such great books–I always have to keep a pen or Goodreads handy so I can jot them down!
