Ten Books Coming Out in the 2nd Half of 2019 I Can’t Wait to Read

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Check out upcoming Top Ten themes on Jana’s blog!

Today we’re looking ahead to the second half of 2019, which is sort of scary because the year is almost half over! It’s tough to narrow this list down to ten, because obviously there are way more than ten books I’m looking forward to, but I was ruthless and put some of my picks on the chopping block. Also, I don’t want these lists to get too repetitive, so some of these are books I haven’t talked much about. I’m also avoiding books being released this summer, because next week’s Top Ten Tuesday is all about summer releases. So here is an incomplete list, there are plenty of books that aren’t on here, but these are the ones I’m MOST excited about (as always, click on the titles to go to Goodreads):

September 10th: Gideon the Ninth (The Ninth House #1) by Tamsyn Muir. There’s a ton of buzz surrounding this book, and I have to admit I’m right there on the buzz train! Early strong reviews don’t hurt either, so I’m hoping this lives up to the hype.

September 17th: The Hanged Man (The Tarot Sequence #2) by K.D. Edwards. I know I add this book to just about every “can’t wait” list I’ve done lately, but the fact remains that I’m super excited to see what Rune and Brand get up to next!

September 24th: The Dutch House by Ann Patchett. OK, this book is not speculative fiction, but Ann Patchett is one of my favorite non-speculative authors and she has a new book coming out this fall!!! This is a multi-generational story and I just know it’s going to be good. I’ve preordered a signed copy from Ann’s bookstore, Parnassus Books.

October 15th: The Absinthe Earl (The Faery Rehistory #1) by Sharon Lynn Fisher. I can hardly wait to read something new from Sharon! You guys, if you haven’t read her books, you’re in for a treat. This is fantasy romance, so you need to be on board with that, but she’s sooo good!

October 26th: Interference (Semiosis Duology #2) by Sue Burke. Semiosis was such a pleasant surprise last year, and I’m eager to head back into Burke’s strange and dangerous world.

November 5th: The Deep by Rivers Solomon. Solomon collaborated with the hip hop group Clipping on her upcoming book, and although I’m still not sure what that collaboration entails, I am excited to read this.

November 12th: Dragon Unleashed  (The Fallen Empire #2) by Grace Draven. I loved Phoenix Unbound last year, and even though the second book in the series is more of a companion novel than a sequel (I believe the main characters are different), I can’t wait to read more of this author.

November 12th: Flamebringer (Heartstone #3) by Elle Katharine White. This is such a fun series! If you love dragons and magic then you should check out the first book, Heartstone.

November 19th: The Queen of Nothing (Folk of the Air #3) by Holly Black. No introduction needed, just a book that EVERYONE is probably looking forward to as much as I am.

December 10th: The Dead Girls Club by Damien Angelica Walters. I feel like Damien is finally going to get more attention with her next book, and that attention will be well deserved. I know this is on a lot of “highly anticipated” lists!

Are you excited about any of these books?

  1. I’m really hyped for The Deep but also a bit nervous as the only work I’ve read by Rivers Solomon so far was The Vela (and I enjoyed their weeks the least). BUT: what a premise. So I probably won’t even try to resist 🙂 I should get round to reading An Unkindness of Ghosts too!

Definitely curious about Interference – I liked rather than loved Semiosis, but it’s such a good setting and I want to see where she takes it.

I’ve vowed to read An Unkindness of Ghosts by the end of the year, it’s been on my TBR far too long:-)

      • I read AUoG a month or so ago and I LOVED IT. There’s some dark and difficult content, so as long as you’re prepared for that. I cannot wait for THE DEEP!

  2. Ah, Tammy, such gorgeous and different books and covers to enjoy in this post! I keep going back to the Sharon Lynne cover, and I *need* to investigate her books more!

    • Tammy

That cover is eye catching, right? She’s great, I feel like it’s been several years since her last book came out.

Ann Patchett wrote one of my favorite books of all time called Bel Canto, but it’s not speculative fiction, it’s more of a thriller/drama. It made me a fan of hers for life:-)

  3. When I was making this list I tried to focus on books I hadn’t featured a lot or mentioned on CWW. However, some popped up again I am sure. I really want to read The Deep and there are several others on here that really interest me. I requested the The Absinthe Earl after hearing you rave about the author but haven’t heard anything back yet.

It’s hard to believe, and I feel like there are so many books that came out in the FIRST half of the year that I still haven’t read.

  4. I’m definitely excited for The Deep, Gideon the Ninth and Dead Girls club. I haven’t read most of these series. They sound fantastic though!

    • Tammy

I’m reading quite a few really good series right now, which is why I keep reading I guess. If I don’t like the first book, I just stop:-)

      • Me too. I know a few people who don’t though. I don’t really understand that. You know it’s going to be torture!

  5. Gideon the Ninth sounds ridiculously amazing. I’ve had the paperback ARC sitting on the shelf for months now, and I’m almost done trying to be patient. I try to read according to release dates, but I’ve snuck in a few chapters and it’s fantastic.

  6. I REALLY need to get around to reading the last sun before the sequel comes out. It was on my most anticipated for last year…. Oops!

And I didn’t know the deep had a new release date. The only reason it isn’t on my list is because goodreads still shows it as June but it obviously didn’t come out yet.

  7. The Hanged Man…in which I’m reminded I still need to read The Last Sun. And Phoenix Unbound!

I had no idea Semiosis had a sequel coming – that’s another on my TBR, I loved the concept but never got to reading it.

Lot of good YA coming out in September/November too (particularly November 5th, what is it about November 5th??).

Publishers love the beginning of the month and they seem to release ALL the books that first week. So hard to schedule your reading, right? 😉

  8. It was hard to pick just ten this week! I’m really intrigued by Gideon the Ninth, also, and there are so many sequels here of books I’ve been meaning to get to. I hope you get a chance to read (and love) all of these!

    • Tammy

You still have some time:-) Actually, the closer to November the better, so you don’t have to wait too long.

    • Tammy

Fantasy romance is not that common, or at least I’m not in the loop. I’m definitely ready to read more of that genre, though.

  9. I am for sure looking forward to Queen of Nothing as much as you are! I think a lot of people are, ha! I’ve got an ARC of Gideon the Ninth and I’m SO EXCITED, yet so afraid it won’t live up to the hype. Because it sounds freaking amazing. I have high hopes for it. I hadn’t heard of The Deep, but gosh, that sounds so good! And I’m sorry, but Daveed Diggs?! As in THE Daveed Diggs of Hamilton renown?! I didn’t know he writes, but it doesn’t surprise me because that man is talented lol. Definitely going to have to check that book out.

I just read a three star review for Gideon the Ninth:-(, hoping it’s just that reviewer who didn’t really connect with it. I have high hopes:-)

  10. I’m looking forward to the deep! And the last son has been on the top of my tbr for months ahhhhh. I need to read it before the sequel comes out

  11. How can such an excellent list create such opposing feelings – I feel absolutely delighted at seeing all these gorgeous books and yet full of despair that I’ll never be able to read them all.
    Great list indeed.
    Lynn 😀
