Future Fiction #24: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

A mix of genres this week, take a look:

Dr. Theo Cray is on the hunt for a killer nurse, and redemption, in a mind-bending psychological thriller by the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Naturalist.

Dr. Theo Cray has a legendary mathematical knack for catching serial killers. Until his exposure to a mind-altering pathogen knocks him off his game. It has upended an investigation, destroyed his reputation, and left him to question his own sanity. One person still trusts him to finish the job. His former professor Amanda Paulson is helping point Cray down a logical path to his prey: a nomadic health-care worker whose murder spree stretches back decades and whose victims number in the hundreds.

Never more desperate to save innocent lives, and to save himself, Cray follows each new lead around the world. But with his own grip on reality slipping away, Cray knows that to follow the pattern of an elusive killer, he must also confront his own dark side. In those dangerous shadows, he can find what he’s hunting. For Cray, venturing into a world without reason is going to be the most frightening journey of his life.

Dark Pattern (The Naturalist #4) by Andrew Mayne. Releases in October 2019 from Thomas & Mercer. Thanks to Mogsy for alerting me to this cover last week! I couldn’t miss sharing the next book in one of my favorite mystery/thriller series.

From the author of ‘The Midnight Dance’ comes an epic YA fantasy featuring royal drama, dark magic, and a secret that could topple a kingdom.

Kalen has been cursed with a gift: he’s a mental picklock, able to access a person’s memories and secrets by touch. His skills make him the perfect questioner to the king, and he spends his days interrogating prisoners of the crown.

But when Kalen’s estranged childhood friend, Prince Cirrus, falls into a sudden coma, the king begs Kalen to intervene. By accessing Cirrus’ mind, Kalen saves his life—and uncovers a terrifying secret. The prince has a sister, banished long ago, and she is the key to the destruction or survival of the kingdom.

With the help of Cirrus and a silver-haired thief named Luna, Kalen must find the princess and bring her home. Or risk death at the hands of his king.

The King’s Questioner by Nikki Katz. Releases in January 2020 from Swoon Reads. Swoon Reads isn’t a publisher I typically pay attention to, but when I stumbled upon this cover, I knew I had to feature this book! Luckily the story sounds just as good.

The collapse of The Flow, the interstellar pathway between the planets of the Interdependency, has accelerated. Entire star systems—and billions of people—are becoming cut off from the rest of human civilization. This collapse was foretold through scientific prediction… and yet, even as the evidence is obvious and insurmountable, many still try to rationalize, delay and profit from, these final days of one of the greatest empires humanity has ever known.

Emperox Grayland II has finally wrested control of her empire from those who oppose her and who deny the reality of this collapse. But “control” is a slippery thing, and even as Grayland strives to save as many of her people form impoverished isolation, the forces opposing her rule will make a final, desperate push to topple her from her throne and power, by any means necessary. Grayland and her thinning list of allies must use every tool at their disposal to save themselves, and all of humanity. And yet it may not be enough.

Will Grayland become the savior of her civilization… or the last emperox to wear the crown?

The Last Emperox (The Interdependency #3) by John Scalzi. Releases in April 2020 from Tor Books. I don’t usually highlight books in a series that I’m behind on, but I saw this cover pop up this week and I wanted to showcase it even though I still haven’t read book #2. I really enjoyed the first book, The Collapsing Empire, and I’d love to catch up before next April.

  1. Great picks! I love the sound of The King’s Questioner! I haven’t read either of the other two series yet but I think I’ve got the first Scalzi book on my kindle…. somewhere… maybe. Lol

I’m always amazed how quickly books in a series seem to come out, but then I realize that time is just passing way too fast, lol.

      • That is so true. Plus we’re probably juggling so many other series. I’m still waiting on the last Terra Ignota book though. It’s killing me because the other three were released so quickly.

  2. I am such a Scalzi fan… but I haven’t started the collapsing empire series yet (which is crazy for me — I’ve read everything else he’s written!). I’m not sure I’d actually want to read it, but I love the cover of The King’s Questioner. Great choices!

I loved the first book, and now I just need to catch up so I’ll be ready for The Last Emperox:-)

I’m hoping I can catch up before this comes out! I do hate starting a series then never seeing it through to the end:-)

  3. I’m intrigued by all of these, but the cover on The King’s Questioner is the most unique and definitely calling to me! This sounds like a book I’d love to read too. Wonderful shares, Tammy!

  4. After the last Interdependency book sort of missed its mark, I’m kind of nervous about book three now, but I’ll still probably read it just to wrap up the trilogy. And HELL YES to more Theo Cray!

  5. Ooh Dark Pattern looks intense. And gah! The third Interdependency! I still need to read the second one too,
