Future Fiction #22: Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

One gorgeous cover reveal spotted this week, and a couple of other new-to-me books that sound great! Take a look:

Corey J. White’s debut novel Repo Virtual blurs the lines between the real and virtual in an action-packed cyberpunk heist story.

The city of Neo Songdo is a Russian doll of realities — augmented and virtual spaces anchored in the weight of the real. The smart city is designed to be read by machine vision while people see only the augmented facade of the corporate ideal. At night the stars are obscured by an intergalactic virtual war being waged by millions of players, while on the streets below people are forced to beg, steal, and hustle to survive.

Enter Julius Dax, online repoman and real-life thief. He’s been hired for a special job: stealing an unknown object from a reclusive tech billionaire. But when he finds out he’s stolen the first sentient AI, his payday gets a lot more complicated.

Repo Virtual by Corey J. White. Releases in April 2020 from Tor.com. First off, this might be my favorite cover OF ALL TIME. I mean, look at it! This is beyond beautiful, evocative and strange. Also, apologies for highlighting a book that is almost a year away from publication. We can only hope that the publisher won’t decide to change the cover design in the next eleven months! Oh and also, the story sounds trippy and totally my thing:-D

A supernatural thriller in the vein of A Head Full of Ghosts about two young girls, a scary story that becomes far too real, and the tragic–and terrifying–consequences that follow one of them into adulthood.

Red Lady, Red Lady, show us your face…

In 1991, Heather Cole and her friends were members of the Dead Girls Club. Obsessed with the macabre, the girls exchanged stories about serial killers and imaginary monsters, like the Red Lady, the spirit of a vengeful witch killed centuries before. Heather knew the stories were just that, until her best friend Becca began insisting the Red Lady was real–and she could prove it.

That belief got Becca killed.

It’s been nearly thirty years, but Heather has never told anyone what really happened that night–that Becca was right and the Red Lady was real. She’s done her best to put that fateful summer, Becca, and the Red Lady, behind her. Until a familiar necklace arrives in the mail, a necklace Heather hasn’t seen since the night Becca died.

The night Heather killed her.

Now, someone else knows what she did…and they’re determined to make Heather pay.

The Dead Girls Club by Damien Angelica Walters. Releases in December 2019 from Crooked Lane Books. I’ve known about this book for several weeks, but I couldn’t for the life of me find a high res image to use in a Future Fiction post. But the image finally came up on Edelweiss (which is where I pull all my book images from) so I could highlight it today! In case you don’t know, I adore Damien Angelica Walters and have read and reviewed several of her past books, all very dark and beautifully written horror. I was surprised to see her with a new publisher, usually it’s Apex Books. But I couldn’t be happier to see a new novel of hers coming out!

Cynthia and Imeld have always lived in the Apartments. A world where every calorie is rationed and the girls who live there are forced to weigh their own hunger against the lives of the others living in the building. It’s a world where the threat of the Wet Room and Ms. Lion always lingers, and punishments are doled out heavily both by the Women who oversee them and the other girls.

When Cynthia is wrongly accused of eating an “A” ration which leads to the death of another girl, her peers punish her harshly. In seeking revenge, she is forced from the only home she has ever known, out into the broader world with one of the Women—Ms. Glennoc—who has tormented her for years. Hunger mixes with politics, intrigue, and social status, and Cynthia needs to figure it out quickly if she’s going to survive and make it back to the Apartments to save Imeld.

With her friend and Ms. Glennoc gone, Imeld is lost. Ms. Tuttle forces her to step into Ms. Glennoc’s shoes, taking on the role of a Woman in charge of all the girls, the punishments, and the Wet Room. The new role feels wrong, especially as Ms. Tuttle’s behavior becomes more and more erratic. Imeld can’t turn her back on the other girls in the Apartments, but how can she save them when she isn’t sure how to save herself? If they rebel against Ms. Tuttle and the other Women, will they starve?

Set in the far future, Ration is an unflinching take on the ways society can both thrive and go wrong as the pressure to survive builds.

Ration by Cody T. Luff. Releases in August 2019 from Apex Books. I’m excited to have a copy of this book, which I plan to read in August. This sounds like a terrifying futuristic horror story, and I can’t wait to get to it!

I don’t think she’s as well known, but this book might give her a bigger audience, I hope so!

  1. Great picks Tammy! I got approved for an ARC of The Dead Girls Club (amazingly) yesterday, so I’m super excited to check it out.

I’m also really excited for Repo Virtual and Ration sounds super interesting. I haven’t heard it before but I’m wondering if there’s some read-between-the-lines commentary happening regarding dieting.

Me too! I’ve never even heard of that publisher so I’m really glad I got an eARC.

Yeah, it’s definitely seems like it’s on the dark side, but I’m super curious.

  2. The first one does have a lovely cover so you’re forgiven for posting it so far in advance 🙂 I have an ARC of The Dead Girl’s Club but now you really have me wanting to check out the author’s other works. I also had to add Ration – go figure.

I think you’re the one who turned me on to The Dead Girls Club, so thank you for that!

  3. I love these posts, especially when I’m only familiar with one like today (Repo Virtual). I always find something new to add to the TBR. This week it’s definitely The Dead Girls Club that’s got my attention. I am so into thrillers these days, and a supernatural one that’s being compared to Head Full of Ghosts to boot! I need this!

I love Walters’ books, and I feel like The Dead Girls Club is somewhat of a departure from her other books. I’m excited!
