The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: “Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.” – A cover featuring a monk/priest/person of the cloth.
I just couldn’t pull a monk/priest book out of my brain this week, so I decided to feature a book I have NOT read, but one I’ve seen around quite a bit. The Dark Monk by Oliver Pötzsch was first published in Germany and is part of a series. Plus it’s got “monk” in the title, in addition to some covers featuring monks! Take a look:
U.S. Edition by Mariner Books 2012 | German edition 2009
Lithuanian edition 2012 | Russian edition 2014
Chinese edition 2013 | Bulgarian edition 2016
There are actually several covers that I really like, but I’m giving the win to the original German edition:
There are nice things about each cover, but I like the one you chose best too. It looks like art that suits the time. Wonderful choice!
I think that I would find this nearly impossible as well. I’m not sure any of the covers really speak to me – maybe the US edition is I really had to pick!
This is a great choice for this week’s theme – it was a bit tricky, wasn’t it? My favourite is the Russian one – I love the menace exuding from that chap as he grabs the girl… Have a great weekend, Tammy!
These covers are all pretty interesting to me, love ones that have old art on them. Love the one you went with. Happy Friday!
Ooh, that’s an interesting quote to put a book cover to! The US edition is probably my favourite – I love the simplicity of it.
Yikes, some of these topics are tough! Tbh, none of these are my kinda cover, but if I had to choose a fave, it’d be either the Russian or Bulgarian cover.
I love the 16th century painting mood of some of these covers! 🙂

A lot of these covers are pretty neat! I think I’d go with yours or the U.S. edition. I’m a pretty big sucker for a cool design and good typography.

All these covers are fantastic! Hard to choose! I guess I’ll go with the Lithuanian
Love the classic look of a lot of these covers, I think my favorite is the Lithuanian edition with the girl and her beautiful braid 😀
This was a tricky week – I love your choice but I like the Lithuanian cover too – for the beautiful braid too.
Lynn 😀
I think I like the Russian and German editions best.

Not sure any of these quite make me want to pick this book up. I think *maybe* the Chinese cover would make me pick it up to check it out just because we don’t see covers like that generally (with or without the Chinese characters I mean) — it’s the look of an old book, I think.
I still like the US version the best. 🙂
I like the Lithuanian and Russian editions best!
