The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: “I know I have the body of a week and feeble woman, but I have the heart and stomach of a king.” – A cover that depicts a novel set in the Tudor period.
It turns out I haven’t read anything set in the Tudor periodโthat I’m aware of! It’s possible I read something long ago and just can’t remember. I mean, hasn’t everyone read The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillipa Gregory?? In any case, this week I’m highlighting a book that I’ve marked “to read” on Goodreads, so I’m halfway there, right? Maid of Secrets by Jennifer McGowan is the first in a YA trilogy about a thief that takes place in the Tudor period. I could only find three covers, so choosing this week should be easy!
US Simon & Schuster Kindle edition 2013
US Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, hardcover edition 2013
French edition 2013
For me it’s a toss-up between the French and the Simon & Schuster hardcover. I absolutely love the Tudor style dresses, and these covers do a great job of showing them off! I’m giving the edge to the US edition, because I love the three girls on the cover. It tells its own little story, I think.
What an interesting topic! I might well post something this week. And I love the French edition -but hey, I’m partial ๐
That French edition is lovely! Happy Friday, Tammy!
I would have to agree with you and chose the one with three. That first one is giving me the creeps for some reason. I tend to not like giant faces on my books ๐ The knife is cool though,
I’m going to have to agree with you! The French edition is great but I find the positioning of the US hardcover really interesting. Never read this one but I’m a sucker for the Tudors. ๐
I agree with you on this one, Tammy. Iโve not heard of this book or series, and I love the Tudors. Itโs a definite add, but if you read it, I look forward to your thoughts!
I like the French one – which isn’t a surprise, but I prefer your choice – it’s very dramatic with the colour choices.

I like all of them and I’m going with your choice. It looks more intriguing. Sets the tone.

I agree, I like the US Hardcover edition because there is so much going on and the contrast between the maid and the other two girls seems very telling. It makes me want to read it too!
Definitely a tough call between the US and French edition, though the US definitely gives me a little more of an idea of what to expect from the book. I like the sound of this book, too.

The middle cover has a definite Game of Thrones vibes, and that’s the main reason I like it ๐

Ooh a thief story sounds fun. ๐ And this is a tough call- I can’t pick a favorite this week!

My vote is for the French edition for sure!
I might have to look this series up. I like the look of that US hardcover especially. ๐
I’m torn between the second and third covers as well. I love the three ladies on the second one in those gorgeous dressed, but there’s something about the dagger in the third one keeps grabbing my attention.

Nope – it’s a no-brainer – I LOVE the French cover. The inherent drama, along with the richness of the Tudor clothing, is gripping and very clever:)
I don’t even know of any books set in the Tudor period, so kudos to you for finding anything at all, haha. My fave is the French one. I like the composition and how it doesn’t show any faces, and it still has the dagger thing that it looks like she’s kind of sneaking away from the guy.
