The Friday Face-Off: Tudor Period

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme: “I know I have the body of a week and feeble woman, but I have the heart and stomach of a king.” – A cover that depicts a novel set in the Tudor period.

It turns out I haven’t read anything set in the Tudor periodโ€”that I’m aware of! It’s possible I read something long ago and just can’t remember. I mean, hasn’t everyone read The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillipa Gregory?? In any case, this week I’m highlighting a book that I’ve marked “to read” on Goodreads, so I’m halfway there, right? Maid of Secrets by Jennifer McGowan is the first in a YA trilogy about a thief that takes place in the Tudor period. I could only find three covers, so choosing this week should be easy!

US Simon & Schuster Kindle edition 2013

US Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, hardcover edition 2013

French edition 2013

For me it’s a toss-up between the French and the Simon & Schuster hardcover. I absolutely love the Tudor style dresses, and these covers do a great job of showing them off! I’m giving the edge to the US edition, because I love the three girls on the cover. It tells its own little story, I think.

Let me know which one is your favorite!

  1. I would have to agree with you and chose the one with three. That first one is giving me the creeps for some reason. I tend to not like giant faces on my books ๐Ÿ™‚ The knife is cool though,

  2. I like the French one – which isn’t a surprise, but I prefer your choice – it’s very dramatic with the colour choices.

  3. I agree, I like the US Hardcover edition because there is so much going on and the contrast between the maid and the other two girls seems very telling. It makes me want to read it too!

  4. Nope – it’s a no-brainer – I LOVE the French cover. The inherent drama, along with the richness of the Tudor clothing, is gripping and very clever:)
