This week’s theme: “Trick or Treat.” – A Halloween inspired cover
It was surprisingly hard to find a book that takes place on or around Halloween, although I know that’s not precisely what the prompt is calling for, I wanted to try to find something Halloween oriented. I dismissed the obvious The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury, because I have a feeling lots of bloggers will choose that book. Instead, I went with Bradbury’s other Halloween tale, Something Wicked This Way Comes, a book I read years ago but still remember as being haunting and magical. There are a gazillion covers out there, but I am sticking with eight that I really like:
Knopf hardcover 1983 | Portuguese edition 2012
German edition 2017 | Russian edition 2010
Bantam Books 1983 | Bantam Doubleday Dell 1969
Italian edition 1996 | Portuguese edition 2006
I really like a lot of these, so it’s hard to pick. I love the Italian edition, for some reason, even though it’s pretty weird! The German edition is also one of my favorites, and I love that the Russian edition actually has a jack o’lantern on the cover. But I guess my favorite is the one I have a copy of (somewhere!):
I love the artistic style and the simplicity.

Oooooh I absolutely love the German edition!!
So I’m not a bit surprised – I like the 2012 Portuguese edition. It’s dark yet colorful (how is that even a thing) and I love the carnival in the background and the font on the title, even though I can’t read it! Great choice of book this week.
Dark yet colorful describes it perfectly:-)
I love that one too! Unfortunately, someone did do this cover π Oh well we can never be too sure. It’s funny that you mentioned the Halloween tree because I was going to go with that one except I’d honestly never heard of it until recently so I nixed that. I had a hard time coming up with a cover for this too.
Yes, I saw at least one other blogger with the cover, but hey, it’s OK! It just means we both have good taste, lol:-)
I’ve missed your posts! I had so much going on. I’ll be checking in regularly from now on. Hope everything has been good for you. XX
It’s nice to hear from you again, Fee!
I LOVED Something Wicked This Way Comes, but none of these covers does a thing for me! I guess if I had to pick one, I’d go with the German edition, but then I wouldn’t be able to read a word of it! HA!
Ha ha, you need to design your own cover! Seriously, there are so many more covers on Goodreads, maybe one will work for you:-)
they are all great covers! It’s hard to pick but I think the German edition is my favorite π
I do like that one too, it’s very atmospheric:-)
Oooh great pick! Love the cover you chose too, it feels surreal. π
It’s spooky, right?
Love that edition too. I need to do a re-read of this one… I’ve only ever listened to it and I recently re-read Fahrenheit 451 and loved it even more than the first time.
I’ve never reread this, but I’m curious to see how it stands up to my (much younger!) reading experience.
An AWESOME choice of book, Tammy:)). My favourite is the same as yours – I’m really impressed that you found so many different covers to the ones that I selected – but then, it is a classic.
There were a lot to choose from, it was just a matter of going through them all on Goodreads and picking my favorite. I do love how we picked mostly different ones from each other:-)
Perfect choice! The title rising up like some obnoxious fume, or an escaping spirit, is quite effective π
Yes, I think it sets the tone of the story perfectly:-)
I like the Portuguese edition! π
Everyone loves that one! But I get it, it’s pretty cool!
I love the one that you chose–it’s also the copy I have! I also like the style of the German edition, it’s very fun and stands out to me, but Knopf one will always be a favorite.
Me too, that’s the copy that I have:-)
I just came from another post that used this book, haha, but you have different covers! I’m gonna have to go with the Portuguese one as my favorite! I do like the one you chose, I just think the title is hard to read if you don’t already know what it says.
I really love the Portuguese as well, the fact that you can’t see the ringleader’s face is sort of disturbing!
I almost went with this book too – I love it and there are some great covers. I love your choice and also the Portuguese edition.
Lynn π
There was LOTS to choose from, that’s the benefit of choosing a really old book!
I loved the movie but never did read the book. I like the Bantam cover but I agree, your choice is the best. Such atmosphere!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen the movie, I’ll have to look into finding it!
It was a tough week! I couldn’t find anything Halloween-y either, so I went the “takes place during Halloween” route. I love the imagery of all your covers this week though!
This book has some really good covers, also a ton because it’s been around for a long time!
I don’t particularly love any of these, but the German one is pretty good. π
The German seems to be a favorite!
I didn’t know this was a Halloween tale. I haven’t yet read this one, but it’s one of my favorite titles for a book. I think your favorite would be mine too, although I really like the German 2017 cover as well.
I love the German cover too, it’s very creepy in a subtle way:-)
I’ve never read this one, but I think I like the Portuguese one the best, except for the weird face above the tents.
That Portuguese edition is really creeping me out! lol
I like the German edition here. It’s creepy-pretty! π
Ooh yeah, I like that one too, it’s mindbending!
Your choice is my favorite too. I love everything about the way the title is placed on the cover. It’s so spooky and atmospheric.
It’s also the original cover, I think, so it’s the one I’m more familiar with.
