The Friday Face-Off – Tower

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme:  “When she was a child, the witch locked her away in a tower that had neither doors nor stairs.” – A cover featuring a tower.

I almost went for the obvious cover (at least for me), The Dark Tower by Stephen King, but then I discovered that this book has quite a few nice covers as well. Uprooted by Naomi Novik was a wonderfully dark fairy tale/romance that took me by surprise. At the heart of the story is the tower where the Dragon lives, a man who chooses a girl from the village every ten years to serve him. A girl who never returns…

Del Rey 2015 | Macmillan UK 2015

Planeta (Spanish ) 2016 | cbj (German) 2016

Algoritam (Croatian) 2016 | Mladinska knjiga (Slovenian) 2017

Pan Books 2016 | Ukrainian edition 2017

This is tough to choose! I really love most of these covers, but in the end I’m going for the Ukrainian edition:

I feel like there is a lot of symbolism in this cover that relates to the story. Which one is your favorite?

  1. You and Bibliosanctum chose the same book this week – I love some of the covers for this one. Including the one you chose I still readly like the Pan cover with the single red rose.

I saw that! I really wasn’t expecting to see this on another FFO, I thought I was being obscure, lol.

  2. I love that this theme is making some of my favorite bloggers think of the same book – that ‘s a sign that I need to hurry up and read it I think. My favorite is the Macmillian one primarily because of the color schemes. I also think the UK version is the first one I saw getting quite a bit of hype.

You should read it, and she has a new book coming out this year, which I’m definitely going to read.

  3. I LOVE this book! I didn’t realize there was so many covers. I had only seen the Del Ray one, which is also my favorite, tho I like the UK and Pan versions too!

I didn’t realize there were this many covers either, until I started looking on Goodreads! And I didn’t even show all of them!

  4. Wow, they are all so different from each other. I’m amazed hahah I like the UK one for how it has that fairytale vibe to it. But man, Pan Books 2016 would probably the winner for me. It’s so simple and clean. Love it like that. 😀

  5. I actually had a feeling there would be a good chance someone else would choose this book this week, simply because there are sooo many gorgeous looking covers! Honestly, it was hard to choose!

  6. This was a great choice for the topic! I’ve always been partial to the Del Rey one over the UK version, but I had never even seen the others. The German, Slovenian, Pan Books, and Ukrainian ones are all great too. I can’t choose!

  7. I love the covers for this book! 😀 And what a reminder that it’s still gathering dust on my shelves!!

My two favourites are the Macmillan UK 2015 edition and the Pan Books 2016 edition. Both use beautiful, simple illustrations and a minimal colour palette – Just gorgeous!!

I love when books get so many different covers, and each one brings a new interpretation to the story. I think Novik got lucky with this one!

  8. Sorry I’m so very late this week – it’s been a bit of a rough one… I love this book – I think it works really well with the theme and the top cover on the right is my favourite – so appropriate to the story with that tower overshadowing the village…
