Over-Booked [60] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my most recent book acquisitions with you! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

I hope everyone in the U.S. had a fabulous Thanksgiving! We spent a couple of days in the desert with my family, and had fun taking photos at a nearby state park:

On the new book side of things, I’ve backed WAY off on my requests, and yet…somehow I still manage to have new review books to share. Go figure! Here’s what I’ve received in the last few weeks:

Physical books:

Dragon and Thief Timothy Zahn. Thanks to Tor for this review book. It was originally published in 2003 and Tor is re-releasing it. It’s fairly short so I hope to read it soon.

Also thanks so Tor for Last Year by Robert Charles Wilson, a surprise arrival which I’m very grateful for! I haven’t read Wilson in some time, and this time travel story looks interesting.

Another surprise, After the Crown by K.B. Wagers arrived unexpectedly from Orbit. I honestly didn’t love the first book in the series, so I wasn’t sure if I wanted to continue it, but now that I have a copy in hand, I might do just that. Thank you Orbit!

Woo hoo! I finally got one of the many Kickstarters I’ve backed! The Chemical Wedding by Christian Rosencreutz is from Small Beer Press, a rather odd book but I couldn’t resist. Apparently, this is John Crowley’s version of a classic story, rewritten by Crowley with illustrations by Theo Fadel. It’s a hardcover without a dust jacket, and the ink is in black and red throughout. I love limited edition books, and I believe this edition was only produced for Kickstarter backers. The level I backed also included this nifty t-shirt!

Digital books for review:

Down Among the Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire. Big thanks to Tor.com, I’m so excited for this sequel to Every Heart a Doorway!

A Perfect Machine by Brett Savory. I spotted this on NetGalley, and because I’m auto-approved for Angry Robot, I had to take a chance on this. The story reminds me of Logan’s Run, for some reason, and wow, I love this cover! Thank you Angry Robot!

Gilded Cage by Vic James. I caved and requested this last week. I really was trying NOT to request anything else for the rest of the year, but because it’s not out until February, I feel OK about it. Plus readers are loving this book, so I really need to read it:-)

The Speckled God by Marc Joan. Thanks to Unsung Stories for the pitch on this novella! I’ve really enjoyed several of their books in the past, and this story that takes place in India sounds interesting.

And to round things off, three more cool-sounding novellas from Tor.com: Standard Hollywood Depravity by Adam Christopher, a story set in his L.A. Trilogy world (I believe this takes place between books one and two). I had great fun with Made to Kill and I’m looking forward to Killing is My Business! Agents of Dreamland by Caitlin R. Kiernan. The description of this story sounds crazy, but I’m intrigued:-) And finally, Brother’s Ruin by Emma Newman. Fresh off of reading After Atlas, I’m so excited to read a novella by Newman! This has a steampunk vibe to it, and it looks completely different from After Atlas, but Newman has jettisoned onto my “must read” list, so I can’t wait!

That’s my haul! Let me know if you plan on reading any of these too!

  1. What gorgeous scenery! I love visiting places like that as I’m very much into both history and photography! I visit a lot of castles over here in the UK. I always wish I’d had the chance to travel a bit more but exploring my own country is fun!

I’m very jealous that you get to visit castles! I traveled through France once and got to visit castles, and I’ll never forget that.

Looking forward to your HUGE haul next week! I’m so excited about the Seanan McGuire book, I don’t know how I’ll wait until next June. I may have to read it really early;-)

      • I know. As excited I am for some of my Tor releases, I almost hate that they send them out so early. You saw I couldn’t wait for the next Matt Wallace book. Now I’m trying to buy time before I put my review on my blog!

  2. A surprise copy of Last Year arrived for me too, and I had no idea it was a time travel story! Now I’m doubly interested! I’m also with you on After The Crown, I’m still deciding if I want to read it (or listen to it, since I did the first book in audio), but if I have some time in December maybe I will.

  3. I spent part of the week in Biloxi and New Orleans. It’s so nice to run away for a bit. LOL I’m loving all of your books. I keep checking my mailbox, but no surprises for me, yet!

  4. I definitely want the Seanan McGuire book. I loved Every Heart a Doorway. And I’m really looking forward to Gilded Cage.
Lovely family picture – thanks for sharing.
    Lynn 😀

  5. Ohhh that desert looks awesome! Good for this time of year, heh heh.

The Speckled God and Gilded Cage sound interesting. I was eyeing Gilded Cage but held back, I’m trying to get over a slump so less books for me right now.
