I can’t remember where I saw this book, but I can’t believe I haven’t heard of it before now. It sounds sooo good, and it’s got some very good reviews so far:
The Heart Does Not Grow Back by Fred Venturini. Releases in November from Picador. This isย a superhero story, and I love that you can’t tell it’s about a superhero from the cover. I believe this originally started life as The Samaritan, but it was rewritten and repackaged with a new title. Here’s what Goodreads says:
EVERY SUPERHERO NEEDS TO START SOMEWHERE…
Dale Sampson is used to being a nonperson at his small-town Midwestern high school, picking up the scraps of his charismatic lothario of a best friend, Mack. He comforts himself with the certainty that his stellar academic record and brains will bring him the adulation that has evaded him in high school. But when an unthinkable catastrophe tears away the one girl he ever had a chance with, his life takes a bizarre turn as he discovers an inexplicable power: He can regenerate his organs and limbs.
When a chance encounter brings him face to face with a girl from his past, he decides that he must use his gift to save her from a violent husband and dismal future. His quest takes him to the glitz and greed of Hollywood, and into the crosshairs of shadowy forces bent on using and abusing his gift. Can Dale use his power to redeem himself and those he loves, or will the one thing that finally makes him special be his demise? The Heart Does Not Grow Back is a darkly comic, starkly original take on the superhero tale, introducing an exceptional new literary voice in Fred Venturini.
As soon as I heard about this book, I frantically went looking for it on NetGalley and Edelweiss (and found it!). I was (shockingly, considering my stats on NetGalley) approved right away! So excited! This is why I love books: those times when you stumble upon something unexpected.
Let me know what you’re waiting on:-)
I haven’t heard of this book either, but it sounds really great. It’s definitely going on my TBR list!
Oh good, I hope lots of people read this!
O_O I’ve never heard of this one, Tammy! What an interesting cover ๐ฎ That’s right though, everyone needs to start somewhere… I hope you enjoy this one when you read it!!
Have a fabulous day ๐
Check out my WoW post!
I love the cover, although at first I was “eww gross”!!
Okay, Tammy, I am upset with you now. I’ve been so good at not requesting from NetGalley this summer, and you just broke my 1.5 month streak ๐ This DOES look good! On Goodreads I saw that a lot of people tagged it “Horror” as well, whether that’s accurate or not I don’t know, but it would be awesome if it were. So yeah, I just requested it too! Crossing my fingers I’ll be approved.
Ha ha! I’m like you, I’ve really been good about requesting and only one or two titles in the past few months. But this has received such great reviews I HAD to get it:-) Don’t hate me!!
This actually looks great! Enjoy it. I’ll be requesting it too!

My WOW
Oh good luck Laura!
Superhero books are kind of hit or miss with me, but I like the sound (and looks) of this one. Yay for you for being approved – I hope it’s as good as it sounds/looks.
My WoW: Mortal Heart by Robin LaFevers.
I really love superhero stories, so I’m hoping this will be as good as the others I’ve loved:-)
I never would have guessed this is a superhero book from that cover. That sounds really freaking good though! Had never heard of it before so thanks for bringing it to my attention! ๐
I know, the cover is a bit unusual, but I like it!
Whoa…. I’ve not heard of this, but definitely sounds like it has some serious potential!! ๐
Yes, I can’t wait to read it:-)
Hi there, I’m the author of the book and I came across this wonderful post. Even though some tag it as horror, and others say it’s sci fi, I tried to firmly ground the story with the characters, especially the friendship between the main character, Dale, and his best friend, Mack. The “horror” elements are firmly rooted in reality, and the “sci fi” is pushed far into the background. There are a few days left on a Goodreads giveaway for some galley copies, if you have accounts there, jump on in! Obviously I hope you all give the book a shot, and if you want to talk it over, even if it was a miss for you, I’m easy to find on Twitter and I treasure every opportunity to connect with readers. Thanks!
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, Fred! I’m hoping this post will encourage lots more people to pick up your book. I’ll be tweeting you when I read it, so stay tuned!
