Over-Booked [108] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

It’s been a few weeks since my last book haul, here are the books that landed on my doorstep and Kindle:

Physical books for review:

First of all, Tor.com has been extremely generous lately, so a huge shout out to the publicity team over there! I received a surprise finished copy of The Monster of Elendhaven by Jennifer Giesbrecht, which is simply gorgeous. I loved this book to pieces, so check out my review if you need convincing! (On another note, this is one of the books up for grabs in my August Book Review Giveaway, so if you haven’t entered, you really should!)

I don’t often write to publishers and request books, so when I do you know it’s something special that I NEED to read. Such was the case with Come Tumbling Down by Seanan McGuire, the fifth book in her Wayward Children novella series, which I love! I just had to request it, and I’m grateful for this lovely ARC.

Then, Docile by K.M. Szpara showed up unexpectedly and I just about screamed. I’ve seen this all over social media and I can’t wait to read it!

Oh, I did actually request another book a few weeks ago. I’ve seen lots of bloggers with ARCs of The Dead Girls Club by Damien Angelica Walters, and I figured I needed a physical ARC as well. I took a chance and sent an email to the publicist (a new to me publicist, by the way) and was very happy when they responded with a “yes.” (And if you missed my recent interview with Damien, you can check it out here.)

And from the lovely team at Orbit books, a wonderful surprise showed up a few days ago: The Wolf of Oren-Yaro by K.S. Villoso. I have been hearing lots of buzz about this book, which was originally self published. Can’t wait to get to it.

And I had forgotten that I requested The Rosewater Redemption by Tade Thompson, so it was a great surprise when this landed in the mail last week. I can’t wait to finish this thought-provoking SF series.

Huge thanks to Tor.com, Orbit Books and Crooked Lane Books!

I also got a couple of cool surprises from Tor Books: First up, Gamechanger by L.X. Beckett, which wasn’t on my radar until it showed up in the mail. Now I’m really excited to read it, since I’ve been seeing some awesome reviews floating around.

Also from Tor, I received a surprise ARC of The Warrior Moon by K. Arsenault Rivera. This is the third book in her Their Bright Ascendancy series, which unfortunately, I haven’t started. This is quite the chunky book at almost 700 pages, so this must go on the back burner for a while.

I (perhaps unwisely) took on another October review book, when Titan Books offered me a copy of Hex Life: Wicked New Tales of Witchery, a beautiful anthology of stories about witches and witchcraft! I simply could not resist. The lineup is fantastic! I’ll be reading these stories over the next month and I’m planning on getting a review up in October.

Finally, I made another rash, split second decision when Titan also offered me a copy of Firefly: The Big Damn Cookbook by Chelsea Monroe-Cassel. I mean, come on! I have yet to crack it open, but it looks like recipes that tie into the show, and it includes stills from the show to go along with it. I’m planning to try at least one of these recipes and blog about it when I review the book, so stay tuned.

Huge thanks to Titan Books and Tor Books!

Digital books for review:

Yes, you’re eyes are not deceiving you. I was lucky enough to get a digital copy of The Hanged Man by K.D. Edwards! And I’m screaming inside for a couple of reasons. 1. Some reviewers have already read it and LOVED it. 2. I’m going to be reading it very soon, even though it’s a December release and I have about 452 September and October releases that I should be reading first. Stand by!

I’m surprised that Gallery/Saga Press put A Longer Fall by Charlaine Harris up so soon. It doesn’t release until January, and usually they wait until closer to pub date to list their books. But I was thrilled to grab this. I’m a huge fan of the first book in the series, An Easy Death.

Huge thanks to Tor for approving me for Interference by Sue Burke! I loved the first book in the series, Semiosis, and I can’t wait to dive back into her unique world.

And finally, a last minute approval from NetGalley for The Light at the Bottom of the World by debut author London Shah turned up. This comes out at the end of October, so I still have time to squeeze it in. I rarely get approved by Disney/Hyperion so this is a big event!

Biggest hugs to Pyr Books, Gallery/Saga Press, Tor Books and Disney!

And that’s my haul for today! Let me know if you plan on reading any of these books, or if you have read any, let me know what you thought!

  1. I got denied for an ARC of The Wolf of Oren-Yaro on Edelweiss, but got talking to an Orbit publicist about The Throne of Five Winds and she’s sending both. Their Bright Ascendancy is a series I need to get cracking on too – the first two books are sitting on my shelf waiting.

I’ve heard that Orbit never approves bloggers on Edelweiss. I think they use it as a platform for librarians and booksellers only. I could be wrong, but I stopped requesting their books there after I kept getting turned down.

  2. Laurie Harris

Ooh they all look good! I’m especially interested in The Hanged Man. The first book in the series was great

  3. A new novel from McGuire is always cause for a little flailing for me, but the cover for the next Wayward Children book makes me wish the publication date would not be so far away! That monolith (?) has such a 2001: A Space Odyssey vibe that I can hardly wait to discover what it means in the economy of the story… 🙂

  4. I actually have the first book in Bright Ascendancy sitting on my shelf from SDCC a few years back….really should read that some day! I’m excited to check out the Wolf of Oren-Yaro, I may need to put in a request for that one. 🙂 Also need to read The Last Sun so I can get to the Hanged Man — Too Many Books!

  5. I always love these posts, especially when they’re full of books I’m unfamiliar with. But the one I’m most drawn to this time is one you’ve mentioned before, The Monster of Elendhaven. Would love to read that one.

  6. I’m super jealous about Come Tumbling Down! I love the Wayward Children series! There are so many good books in this post, and even though most of them are on my TBR, but I did add a couple more 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

I’m going to try to read a couple of stories a day from Hex Life, that’s the best way to manage anthologies, at least for me. Let’s see if I can do it:-)

  7. As ever, I’m turning unbecoming shades of green at this list… ESPECIALLY A Longer Fall, as I LOVED An Easy Death… but I also love the look of Docile and Gamechanger. Have a wonderful time reading these, Tammy!

Thanks Sarah, I know we are both big fans of An Easy Death, I hope you can snag a copy of the sequel as well:-)

  8. Holy smokes that is one amazing haul! I recently picked up Gamechanger from my library, I’m hoping to start it soon and excited to see what you think!

    • Tammy

I think I’m going to try to read Gamechanger in November for Sci Fi Month, I’m excited, it has great reviews so far!

    • Tammy

Isn’t that crazy?? Honestly food isn’t the first thing I think of when I think of Firefly, but hey, I’ll give it a shot:-)

  9. You have some books I’m really excited for too! I think I’m first on the waitlist for an audiobook of Monster of Elendhaven at my library 😀 How did you get the copy of Hanged Man? I haven’t seen that one pop up on NG or EW, did I miss it?
