The Friday Face-Off: Pirates

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme: “I’m disinclined to acquiesce to your request.” – A cover featuring pirates.

I had to go way back for this week’s theme! I chose a book I read before I started blogging, but there were plenty of covers to choose from, so I’m glad I remembered this book! My choice this week is On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers. Here are some of my favorite covers:

Babbage Press edition 2006 | Corvus Press (UK?) edition 2011

Subterranean Press edition (U.S.) 2008 | Spanish edition 2005

French edition 2012 | French edition 2019

Spanish edition 1990 | Serbian edition 2011

This week it’s very hard to choose a favorite, I love so many of these. But the cover that keeps drawing my eye is the French 2012 edition. I love the composition with the rolling wave and the dark, ominous skies.

Let me know which cover you like best:-D

  1. I’ve never seen or heard of this book before but it certainly has some great covers. I love your choice – it’s like a little work of art. The French covers are often my favourite.

  2. I’ve never heard of this book either but I am really liking the Corvus Press. I went with a YA book which was a stretch but all of my newer titles that featured any kind of pirates really didn’t have too many cover versions.

  3. I haven’t read this one and I enjoy Tim Powers writing – what a great selection of covers! I like your choice – and I also love the other French cover. Both are classy which a hint of menace without tipping into farce – the one with the skeleton made me laugh!

I think my favorite edition is the Spanish edition 2005, but the French edition was a close second!
