The Friday Face-Off: Amulet

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme: A cover featuring an amulet.

Way back in the day, I discovered the House of Night series by mother/daughter writing team P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast. I devoured this series like popcorn! I’m not sure I’d enjoy these books today, after years of writing critical reviews, but they sure were a blast back then! Book #3 in the series is Chosen, and has a lovely moon amulet on the cover, so this book works great for today’s theme. Here are the covers I found:

U.S. paperback 2008 | Indonesian edition 2011

UK paperback 2009 | Czech edition 2010

Chinese edition 2010 | Lithuanian edition 2010

There were some other covers I wanted to use, but the images on Goodreads were so small that I knew they wouldn’t show up very well. There really isn’t a standout cover in this bunch, at least in my opinion, but I’m going to pick a favorite anyway. Although the Czech edition is lovely, I’m going with the US paperback as my choice, simply because I think it represents the story the best. Plus the overall design and balance is better (IMO) than the very similar Indonesian edition.

But I’d love to hear what you think! Which cover do you like best? Have you read this series?

  1. I had never gotten around to these but I did enjoy some other PC Cast stuff back in the day too! Like you, not sure how I’d find some of it with my critic brain engaged, but definitely have fond memories. Interesting covers on these! 🙂

  2. I know I’ve read the first 5 or 6 and like you, I ate them like candy. Not sure why I never continued. Do you know they recently started writing a companion series? I liked the Czech version but I think it’s because I am really drawn to the black, green and white color combination. And funny, there’s no necklace in it. So I look at the Chinese edition and see dark Christopher Robin. I think I need coffee!

  3. I think I’d probably go with your choice as well. I like the Chinese edition’s cover, but it doesn’t seem to match the theme of the others very well.

  4. I liked your favorite best, too, Tammy! These covers are gorgeous. I’d never thought about how reading critical reviews of books I love would shape how I felt about them later, but I’m sure that’s happened with me, too. In fact, I’ve loved many books that aren’t popular.

  5. Isn’t it weird to think back to books you loved when you were younger or just before you started reviewing and to realize you probably wouldn’t like them if you read them now? I agree with your choice though! I haven’t read the books, but I just like that one the best.

  6. Given I spent Friday looking after my baby granddaughter, I’m horribly late catching up with FF comments and visits! I love this choice for the week’s theme – and I also completely agree with your choice, although the Indonesian version is also a strong contender – I like the lipstick and the funky pink font:). But ultimately the lacework across the US cover gave it a prettier, more appealing feel.

  7. I agree with your choice, tho like you said, there really isn’t a standout winner in this group. I also really like the pink moon on the Lithuanian cover, but the rest is too boring, just solid black. On the Indonesian cover is the girl wearing a white shirt? Because at first I thought she was naked and it was really weird?

  8. I’m going with your choice this week – and like you I devoured this series originally, not sure it would work if I was to pick it up now but I had fun at the time.
