The Friday Face-Off: New Beginnings

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme: A cover that’s fresh. New beginnings for a new year.

Well, I’m not sure how to interpret a “fresh cover,” but I’ve decided to do something a little different this week. I’m taking the idea of “new beginnings” and applying it to space travel. I’ve found three books that deal with starting over on a new planet, and I’ve found two different covers for each one. Take a look:

Do You Dream of Terra Two? by Temi Oh. Left: Simon & Schuster UK edition. Right: U.S. Saga Press edition. This book hasn’t been released yet, but I was lucky enough to read it early, and I absolutely loved it! In the future, Earth is becoming less and less habitable, and so a team of travelers set out on a twenty-three year journey to start over on the planet Terra-Two.

Semiosis by Sue Burke. Left: U.S. Tor Books edition. Right: U.S. Harper Voyager paperback edition. A group of colonists end up landing on the wrong planet, and they are forced to survive despite the planet’s less than desirable conditions. This book just came out in 2018, so there are only two book covers so far. I actually love both of these!

Artemis by Andy Weir. Left: U.S. Crown hardcover edition. Right: U.S. Subterranean Press limited edition hardcover. The story takes place in Artemis, the only city on the Moon, where the wealthy come to play. Artemis actually has a fair amount of covers to choose from, but I decided to keep it simple.

So which are my favorites from each book?

This was pretty easy for me to choose. Although I actually love both of the Terra-Two covers, the UK edition gets the edge because it relates much better to the story. The Semiosis paperback edition is just slightly more interesting to me, and I can never turn down a Subterranean Press edition, they always do such a fantastic job.

What do you think about these covers?

I’m not crazy about the original Artemis cover, to be honest, but I do love both Semiosis covers:-)

  1. What an excellent idea for this theme! Love your approach, Tammy:). As for the covers – they are all brilliant, but I happen to love the planetscape for Do You Dream of Terra-Two? which is also on my list to acquire.

  2. YES! I agree with all of them. It’s sad that the special edition of Artemis wasn’t used for the main release. I think more people would have picked it up. And amazing what a little bit of subtle difference with Semiosis makes!

I agree, I know a lot of people seem to love the very simple, original cover for Artemis, but I think it’s sort of boring:-)

  3. Great take on the topic–I would have had no idea what to do with this one! I agree with all of your choices, though I do like both of most of these, haha. I don’t know if I’ve ever heard of Do You Dream of Terra Two before, but I think I’ll have to check it out.

I haven’t been hearing much about Do You Dream of Terra-Two yet, which is surprising since it’s out in a couple of months. I hope it gets more marketing!

Isn’t it cool? I love the angle, looking down on Artemis, with the domes and tunnels, I just love it!

  4. Hello! First off, I love the design of your website. This site feels cozy and full of exciting information.

Regarding this face-off, my favorites for two of the three titles is different. The Tor edition of Semiosis and the Crown hardcover design of Artemis are uncluttered, look more professional, and still suggest a mysterious speculative element. I most like the curl of the arm(?) in Semiosis that almost underscores the tagline, “sentience takes many forms”. The simple lunar image and distinguished font on the Crown cover looks more modern than Subterranean’s 90s style.

I agree about Do You Dream of Terra Two? The character catches my attention. I wonder about the thoughts and feelings develop beneath that helmet.

Thanks for choosing these titles. All three look like interesting reads.

  5. What an excellent idea – I love your interpretation and wish I’d thought of it and I love your choices.
    Lynn 😀
