The Friday Face-Off: Seasonal Cover

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme: “Ho ho ho!” – A seasonal cover.

I don’t usually read holiday themed books, so I had to do a little digging around for something this week. Add in the fact that a great choice would have been Joe Hill’s NOS4A2, which has a Christmas setting, but unfortunately I haven’t read it. So I went way back to a book I read years ago, Winter’s Tale by Mark Helprin. I don’t remember much about the story, to be honest, but I do know it’s very polarizing and you either love it or hate it. But it does have some very wintery covers, so take a look:

Mariner Books paperback (U.S.) 2005 | U.S. hardcover 1983

French edition 2015 | Russian edition 2012

UK edition 1983 | Romanian edition (year?)

Czech edition 2014 | Polish edition 2014

If only I could remember why there is a flying horse in the story, lol. I love that these are all shades of blue and gray, and it’s a tough choice this week, but ultimately the French version is my favorite:

Which one do you like best?

  1. The 80s child in me is drawn to all the covers with pegasus on them! But the one you picked is absolutely lovely as well. The color and image represent “winter” well. I have a book or two from this author to read and I really need to find the time.

  2. I really like the picture of the Mariner Books paperback (U.S.) 2005 cover but it would never entice me to read the book haha, so I like the cover you chose best

  3. What a fabulous choice for this week’s theme, Tammy! So many of the covers are really, really pretty. I do love your choice – but WHY is it disfigured by that horrible bright red blob?? It ruins the whole thing by immediately drawing the eye away from that wonderful artwork! I think my favourite is the Czech edition:)

  4. Aaaah, I love this book SO MUCH. The weird thing is that it’s the kind of literary thing that I’d normally hate but it’s just so very weird that it drew me in. I thought the horse kind of represented God or something…but all of that is probably up for interpretation, haha.
