The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: “There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it. ” – A scary cover.
I’m not sure how scary these covers are, but the story definitely had its frightening moments. The Girl with All the Gifts by M.R. Carey is still one of my favorite horror/science fiction stories, and because it’s Sci Fi Month, I’m trying to pick sci-fi books for each Friday Face-Off this month. This is quite an odd collection of covers, I feel like they are all over the place. But hey, let’s go with it and let me know what you think!
U.S. hardcover 2014 | French edition 2018
Bulgarian edition 2014 | Indonesian edition 2017
U.S. paperback movie tie-in 2016 | Chinese edition 2015
Russian edition 2016 | Serbian edition 2016
In my opinion, the creepiest cover has to be the Russian one, the smile on Melanie’s face is seriously going to give me nightmares! The Serbian and Indonesian covers are just. . . weird. I’m not usually a fan of movie tie-ins, and this one doesn’t do anything for me. I still love the U.S. edition, but for me the French edition takes the same idea and color scheme and just does a better job overall:
It’s a toss up between the Bulgarian edition 2014 and the Russian edition 2016
The Russian edition is terrifying, and I’m not sure in a good way and the Indonesian one looks like an anime book. I think I prefer the same one you picked for the creepy factor. I’ve not read the book but found the movie to be pretty good!
I’d go with the Bulgarian cover. It’s ominous.

Nice one! Like the one you picked too. It’s similar to the original but I like the artwork better on this version.
Welp the Russian edition is definitely the most disturbing!
The french is my fave too
They are all very pretty tho. The Indonesian one is quite cute, but it doesn’t go well with the story in my opinion.
I like the Indonesian one but it doesn’t seem to go with the rest of the covers so I am guessing it doesn’t fit the story? I like the Russian one too, she kind of looks like a young Harley Quinn (I know Harley didn’t become Harley until she was an adult but if she was Harley as a kid that is what I think she would look like!)

I had no idea there were so many covers for this book! I like the one you chose too. The Bulgarian one will give me nightmares 😀
I’m with you and the French edition. There are so many pretty, yet creepy elements to that one.
I think I like the US and French ones too- it’s a toss up if I had to pick one. They’re both nice.

Weirdly, the French is the scariest for me — mostly bc those look like veins!
Yikes, that Russian one is frightening. I like the first two covers the best.

Gawd that Russian one is SUPER creepy. I also really love the root design of the French version!

I’d only seen the US version, but some of these are def creepy, esp that Russian one!!
That russian one is creepy as fuck. But that chinese one as well. And I agree with you on the French one. That one is for sure the best.

oh this was a DNF for me but nothing to do with the book I was just having the worst slump ever. All these wonderful covers make me want to finish it! My fav is the French too! 🙂

Wow – that Bulgarian version gives me the chills. Love your choice, so similar and yet the changes really do bring something more to it.
Lynn 😀
The Chinese one is also creepy! But that face on the Russian one is insane… The originality of all these variant covers on all these books never seize to surprise me! 😛

I think the Bulgarian one is the creepiest–the sense of decay and inhumanity: ook!
