Over-Booked [93] – A Book Haul Post

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves over at Tynga’s Reviews and The Sunday Post at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

Lots of cool new books in the mail! Some requests came through, and I got some awesome surprises as well.

Physical books for review:

A couple of new books came from the Ace/Daw team. First up, Breach by W.L. Goodwater. I thought this was science fiction, but it’s actually historical fantasy, and it sounds fantastic!

I also received the paperback of Terminal Alliance by Jim C. Hines. The second book in the series is coming out next year, and I missed reading this one. I’m glad I can catch up before book two arrives, it sounds really good!

A surprise from Orbit showed up, A Bad Deal for the Whole Galaxy by Alex White. I still need to read the first book in the series, A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe, and I’m hoping I can read both books some time in December when this one releases.

I also got a surprise non fiction book from Hachette Books called Death in the Air by Kate Winkler Dawson. I don’t usually read non fiction, but this sounds really good, about a terrible event called The Great Smog of 1952 in London and a serial killer that took advantage of it to kill a bunch of people. I may have to check it out, time permitting!

The BEST surprise I got this week was an ARC of The Fall by Tracy Townsend, book two in her series after The Nine, one of my favorite books of 2017! This book comes out in January and fully intend to read it in December:-D

And another awesome surprise arrived just a couple of days ago, Gates of Stone by Angus Macallan. I featured this on a Waiting on Wednesday post a few months ago, and had completely forgotten about it. I’m really looking forward to this Asian inspired fantasy.

The Consuming Fire by John Scalzi follows The Collapsing Empire, a book I had fun with last year. I’ve read some mixed reviews so I’m a little nervous of this, but we’ll see!

Finally, I received a finished copy of An Easy Death by Charlaine Harris. This is the start of a new urban fantasy series, and I’ve been hearing good things about it.

Many thanks to Ace Books, Daw Books, Orbit, Hachette, Pyr, Tor Books, and Saga Press!

I’m not sure how I got on this list, but wow, I’m thrilled that Simon Pulse has my name! This box of #ShelfQueens books came a few days ago, and I was excited to see that four out of five of them are already on my Goodreads TBR. Girls with Sharp Sticks by Suzanne Young is new to me, but it sounds really good! Also in the box were The Cold is in Her Bones by Peternelle van Arsdale, Crown of Feathers by Nicki Pau Preto, Sky Without Stars by Jessica Brody and Joanne Rendell, and Slayer by Kiersten White. I’m looking forward to all of these, huge thanks to Simon Pulse!

Digital books for review:

Station Zero by Philip Reeve is the third and final book in Reeve’s amazing Railhead series, and I’m so excited to read this! Thanks to Capstone for the review copy:-D

Stephanie Burgis sent out a call for reviewers on Twitter recently for her story Spellswept, a prequel to Snowspelled. I saw the tweet and immediately responded. It wasn’t until I started reading Spellswept that I realized I had already read it, oops. It was part of Burgis’ collection The Underwater Ballroom Society, which I really enjoyed. But hey, check out the gorgeous cover art!

And that’s my book haul! Let me know if you plan on reading any of these books:-D

The Nine is such an awesome book, especially if you like heist stories, I hope you get the chance to read it:-)

  1. You sure got a lot of books! I can’t say I know any of the titles but The Fall by Tracy Townsend and An Easy Death by Charlaine Harris sound good to me. Have a great weekend!

Oh you would love Railhead, it’s such an underrated series, I’m not sure I even know any other bloggers who are reading it.

There are several here I’d like to try, but with the exception of Breach they’re all book 2 in a series I haven’t started yet. Guess I have a lot of catching up to do!

  3. I also got Breach, A Bad Deal, The Fall, Gates of Stone this week, but I they didn’t quite make the cut off into my book haul post. And I was sooo excited to get the Simon Teen box, especially since Crown of Feathers was one I really REALLY wanted to read and my Edel request had been hanging for months now. Crossing my fingers too that my copy of An Easy Death shows up soon, it was supposed to have arrived two weeks ago!

My copy of An Easy Death took forever too. I suspect it wasn’t mailed when they said it was…;-)

Yes, Crown of Feathers is about phoenixes, which sounds so unique. Hopefully the story lives up to the gorgeous cover:-)

Exactly, my husband still laughs at me when I get excited about book mail. I mean, you’ve got to be crazy to NOT be excited by books, right?;-)

  4. Wow, that cover for Breach really screams SF, interesting to note it’s historical fantasy. I think that makes it even more intriguing to me, wondering what in the book inspired the cover.
Looks like you got a lot of great here! Also looking forward to An Easy Death and thanks for the reminder that I need to read The Nine!

  5. That is a lovely cover on the Spellswept novella. I need to read that series. I finished An Easy Death yesterday and loved it. In fact, I need book #2 NOW! The characters are great and the story line pretty different from a lot of stuff I’ve been reading lately. I am anxious to see some reviews on Slayer. I never watched Buffy (I know, how sad) but I would like to someday. I hope you have a great week and how is your daughter enjoying college?

  6. As ever, your book haul has me drooling with envy. I LOVE the look of A Bad Deal for the Whole Galaxy and Terminal Alliance. I’ve read The Consuming Fire and if you enjoyed Collapsing Empire, I don’t think you’ll have a problem with the second book, either. I certainly enjoyed it:)

I am looking forward to The Consuming Fire, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Terminal Alliance will be a nice, humorous change of pace:-)

  7. Great Haul! I am excited for Charlaine Harris’s new book! I read a good chunk of the Sookie Stackhouse books (there were a TON of them) and I really liked them 😀
