The Friday Face-Off: Mystery

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme: “The impossible could not have happened, therefore the impossible must be possible in spite of appearances.” – A cover for a mystery novel.

Lock In by John Scalzi is a futuristic murder mystery with a cool premise: In the future, a virus has swept the world that leaves one percent of its victims “locked in” to their bodies, fully aware but unable to move or speak. I had so much fun with this book, and it’s got some cool covers:

Tor Books (US) 2014 | Thai edition 2017

Portuguese edition 2018 | Japanese edition 2016

German edition 2015 | Italian edition 2016

I like that a lot of these stick with the original red, white and black color scheme. This is a tough one for me to call. I like how clever the Italian edition is, with the plastic toy effect, but ultimately I’m going for the simplicity of the Portuguese cover:

What do you think? Which is your favorite?

  1. Ooo… what an interesting choice of covers for this one – which is a book I absolutely love! I’m going to join the majority – it’s the Tor cover that also gets my vote in that it most effectively demonstrates just how many people were smitten by this horrible illness.

  2. Wow! it sure does sound horrific. I am not a big sci-fi fan but the simple Portuguese one is bang on? locked in? It’s a murder mystery so I think the gun is perfect. Idk you read the book so you would know if it illustrates it the best.

  3. I’ve actually been saving up this book for a possible future theme, because just look at all the cool covers! So I had a favorite already, and it was the plastic toy model pieces one πŸ˜€

  4. It’s wild just how different these covers are from each other. Aside from some of the being red and white, it’s hard to believe that they all go with the same book. All of that said, the one you picked is the same one I would choose., mainly because of the gun and because it stands out by not being red and white, lol.
