The nitty-gritty: A fascinating concept, political intrigue, plenty of mysteries, but written in a format that might not work for every reader. I love reading hyped books like Sleeping Giants, because I like to form my own opinions. Sleeping Giants has received all sorts of starred reviews from review journals, but in the blogging community, […]
The nitty-gritty: Intricate and otherworldly, emotional and thought provoking, Tidhar’s vision of the future is both familiar and alien at the same time. With each season a new godling appeared in the streets and alleyways of Central Station. They were nebulous things, more than human, less than Other, like semi-sentient sculptures which straddles both the […]
I just counted the books I’ve reviewed in the past two months, and I’m horrified with myself. How can I call myself a book blogger?? It’s been a very “real life” heavy few months, and reading/blogging has had to take a backseat to other things. I hope I can get back to the kind of […]
The nitty-gritty: A wonderful mixed bag of 80s nostalgia, creepy horror and a friendship that weathers all sorts of obstacles. “Promise me you’ll always be my friend,” she said. “DBNQ,” Abby replied. It was their shorthand for “I love you.” Dearly But Not Queerly. And they lay there on the freezing sand and felt the […]
A few years ago, I had the pleasure of reading the first two books in J.D. Horn’s Witching Savannah series (The Line and The Source), and really enjoyed them. Too many review commitments prevented me from getting to the third book, but I was super excited when a publicist contacted me about featuring J.D.’s latest […]

Welcome to Over-Booked, where I’m linking up with Stacking the Shelves and the Sunday Post and sharing my latest and greatest! In sad blogging news this week, in case you didn’t hear, two wonderful SFF blogs are shutting down. The amazing SF Signal, which has been going strong for over twelve years (!!) and My […]
The nitty-gritty: An original world-building idea that just didn’t get off the ground for me. Perhaps a novel might work better? I was excited to check out a shorter piece of fiction by Fran Wilde, whose Updraft I really enjoyed, and so when Tor.com announced The Jewel and her Lapidary, I jumped at the chance […]
I’m very happy to welcome Geoffrey Girard back to Books, Bones & Buffy! I was lucky enough to chat with him a couple of years ago, and now he’s here answering a completely different set of questions. Geoffrey’s latest is his debut short story collection, out now from Apex Books, called first communions (and yes, […]
Welcome to What’s on my Plate, a post I write each month to let you know (and to remind myself!) what books I’ll be reading, as well as other posts I have planned. April went by in a flash, right? I did pretty well with my April review books, but there are a few I […]
The nitty-gritty: Potential not quite realized, but a fantastic premise full of hilarious dialogue and some hard-hitting emotional moments near the end. And once again a cool cover and a really good idea grab my attention and I immediately hit that “request” button! Down with the Shine does have a great concept: a girl is […]
