Future Fiction #285 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Three new covers, all in shades of green (a happy mistake). Also, did you notice all three books have six words in the title?

A dark gothic adult fairytale with a murderous aunt, witches and a vengeful housekeeper.

Clara Woods is a killer. At the bottom of the garden is a flowerbed, long overgrown, where her late husband rests in peace – or so she always thought. Until the girls arrived.

Lily and Violet are her adolescent nieces, recently orphaned and in urgent need of care. Raising teenagers is certainly not what Clara had envisioned for herself, but her funds are drying up and the girls come with a hefty sum attached.

There is only one both girls are untrained witches, with newly heightened powers which they inherited from their mother when she died. Lily can literally see how people feel and knows when they lie. And young Violet can see the dead man at the bottom of the garden. She can see all the dead, and call them back.

Soon Clara is surrounded by apparitions, and at war with the gifted girls in her care. The latter have become a liability – and know far more than they should. There is a war waging in this house, and only one side can win…

At the Bottom of the Garden by Camilla Bruce. Releases in January 2025 from Del Rey. I’m so excited for a new Camilla Bruce book! And this sounds so good. Not that I even need a blurb to convince me to read it:-)

From the author of Citadel and popular TikTokker C.M. Alongi comes a bewitching new romantic fantasy where a young witch seeks her freedom by forging a deal with Death…

A young witch forced to play concubine for her impirical captor, finally breaks free to find a life of her own, but even those with the power to call Death cannot outrun their past…

All witches must serve the cruel and immortal Emperor Yacatl. But after four years of terror and abuse, Khana not only kills one of his favorite courtiers with her magic, but also discovers the secret of his power and he’s been making deals with Death. And now, so is she.

Armed with magic that she doesn’t fully understand, Khana flees the empire and stumbles into a small mountain town filled with fierce warriors that ostracize her for being a witch, despite using her abilities to heal their sick and injured. There, her magic and courage are put to the test as she is forced to stop running and fight back against the emperor that wants her dead.

But every deal she makes with Death takes another piece of her soul. And there’s only so much Khana can give before she turns into the very monster she’s trying to destroy.

The Witch Who Trades With Death by C.M. Alongi. Releases in March 2025 from Angry Robot. The cover and the blurb don’t really say “romantic fantasy” to me, but still, I’m intrigued by this story. Also, love the cover!

Giant turtles, impossible ships, and tidal rivers ridden by a Drowned girl in search of a family in the latest in the bestselling Hugo and Nebula Award-Winning Wayward Children series from Seanan McGuire.

Nadya had three mothers: the one who bore her, the country that poisoned her, and the one who adopted her.

Nadya never considered herself less than whole, not until her adoptive parents fitted her with a prosthetic arm against her will, seeking to replace the one she’d been missing from birth.

It was cumbersome; it was uncomfortable; it was wrong.

It wasn’t her.

Frustrated and unable to express why, Nadya began to wander, until the day she fell through a door into Belyrreka, the Land Beneath the Lake–and found herself in a world of water, filled with child-eating amphibians, majestic giant turtles, and impossible ships that sailed as happily beneath the surface as on top. In Belyrreka, she found herself understood for who she was: a Drowned Girl, who had made her way to her real home, accepted by the river and its people.

But even in Belyrreka, there are dangers, and trials, and Nadya would soon find herself fighting to keep hold of everything she had come to treasure.

Adrift in Currents Clean and Clear (Wayward Children #10) by Seanan McGuire. Releases in January 2025 from Tordotcom. Oh look at the cute turtle on the cover! This series has had its ups and downs for me, but I certainly won’t be missing book #10 in the series.

  1. I’ve never read anything by Camilla Bruce but the description for that new one sounds so good. Might have to start with that one, even though it’s a while before it’s released 😀

Me too, I usually shy away from anything that’s advertised as “TikTok sensation,” lol.

  2. I really need to catch up on the Wayward Children series. It started so strong except for that Sugar Sky one which I didn’t care for much at all. I love that there is a turtle on this one. I also featured the Camilla Bruce novel this week. I couldn’t resist because it has all my buzzwords – Gothic, withes, killer Plus the cover is gorgeous! Great choices this week.

I didn’t like Sugar Sky either, but I always read each new book because there have been some good ones.

I know, I didn’t realize until I chose the last book that they all have six words, lol.

  3. I only needed to see the bold bit of the blurb to add the garden book to my TBR. Somehow I haven’t read a book by the author yet although I’ve added a few to my TBR. I immediately added the witch one to my tbr too. I wouldn’t have guessed that it’s meant to be a romantic fantasy from it’s blurb either though. I also somehow haven’t started the Wayward Children series yet but really want to. I can’t believe it’s got to book 10 already. I love the cover of this installment too.
