Future Fiction #275 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Check out these three gorgeous covers!

A student will find that the hardest lessons sometimes come outside the classroom in this stunning dark academia novel from the acclaimed author of The Year of the Witching and House of Hunger.

Lennon Carter’s life is falling apart.

Then she gets a mysterious phone call inviting her to take the entrance exam for Drayton College, a school of magic hidden in a secret pocket of Savannah. Lennon has been chosen because—like everyone else at the school—she has the innate gift of persuasion, the ability to wield her will like a weapon, using it to control others and, in rare cases, matter itself.

After passing the test, Lennon begins to learn how to master her devastating and unsettling power. But despite persuasion’s heavy toll on her body and mind, she is wholly captivated by her studies, by Drayton’s lush, moss-draped campus, and by her brilliant classmates. But even more captivating is her charismatic adviser, Dante, who both intimidates and enthralls her.

As Lennon continues in her studies her control grows, and she starts to uncover more about the secret world she has entered into, including the disquieting history of Drayton college, and the way her mentor’s tragic and violent past intertwines with it. She is increasingly disturbed by what she learns. For it seems that the ultimate test is to embrace absolute power without succumbing to corruption . . . and it’s a test she’s terrified she is going to fail.

An Academy For Liars by Alexis Henderson. Releases in September 2024 from Ace. This wasn’t even on my radar, but luckily I saw the cover reveal on Instagram. Henderson has two books coming out soon, and I have to admit this sounds fantastic—dark academia with an intriguing cover!

From CJ Leede, the author of Maeve Fly, comes a scorching new apocalyptic novel. Neil Gaiman’s American Gods meets The Last of Us in this epic and sweeping story about the end of the world as we know it.

A virus is spreading across America, transforming the infected and making them feral with lust.

Sophie, a good Catholic girl, must traverse the hellscape of the midwest to try to find her family while the world around her burns. Along the way she discovers there are far worse fates than dying a virgin…

The end times are coming.

American Rapture by C.J. Leede. Releases in October 2024 from Tor Nightfire. I loved Leede’s debut Maeve Fly, and I’m so excited her new book is releasing this year. The blurb is pretty short, but I’m already excited:-)

For a grieving writer, the secrets of the past and present converge in a novel of gripping psychological suspense from the author of The Daughters of Block Island.

Unmoored by her husband’s death and suffering from writer’s block, novelist Saoirse White moves to Providence, and into the historic home of Sarah Helen Whitman, the nineteenth-century poet and spiritualist once courted by Edgar Allan Poe. Saoirse’s certain she’ll find inspiration in the quiet rooms, as well as in the tucked-away rose garden and forgotten cemetery at the back of the property.

Saoirse is immediately welcomed by an effusive trio of transcendentalists obsessed with Whitman, the house, and Whitman’s mystic beliefs. Saoirse, emerging from grief and loneliness, welcomes the idea of new friends taking her mind off the past—even as they hope to summon it. When she meets Emmit Powell, a charismatic and charming prize-winning author, Saoirse thinks she’s finally turned a corner.

Emboldened by new romance, Saoirse begins to write again and, through her writing, rediscover herself. But as old fears return, she finds that nothing about her new life is what it seems—and a secret she’s tried so hard to bury may not be the only thing that comes back to haunt her.

Beneath the Poet’s House by Christa Carmen. Releases in December 2024 from Thomas & Mercer. Last year I read and loved Carmen’s The Daughters of Block Island, and now she’s back with another suspenseful story with Gothic vibes. I’m very excited to check this out!

  1. An Academy For Liars sounds like a really good read and I love dark academia but haven’t read many of those just yet so this book would be perfect for me!

American Rapture sounds… unique to say the least. And I know how much you enjoyed Maeve Fly so I’m sure this one will be excellent as well.

And unsurprisingly I also love the sound of Beneath the Poet’s House. I kinda zeroed in on Edgar Allan Poe’s name. My eyes went straight to it lol

  2. Ooh I didn’t know that Alexis Henderson had two books out, I’ll have to look the other one up. This ones definitely going on my list though. Dark academia always sounds so intriguing and I loved House Of Hunger.

As you’ve enjoyed books by the other two authors I’ll keep my fingers crossed that these future releases prove to be just as good

Her other book is a sequel to The Year of the Witching. I just noticed there isn’t a date listed yet, so it might come out next year.

  3. The new Alexis Henderson book looks interesting! I read her debut during the pandemic and enjoyed it, but never got around to her second book (which I think was about vampires?). I do enjoy a good dark academia book every now and then.

I loved her debut, and her second book was pretty good too. I am excited to read this new one!

  4. Beneath the Poet’s House. I like that title. And a b0ok about a writer with references back to Poe and transcendentalism? Yeah, I’m curious.
