Future Fiction #249 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

It was a good week for cover reveals, check out these three amazing-sounding books:

FATE IS A CRUEL MISTRESS

The daughter of a powerful but disgraced Blood Worker, Shan LeClaire has spent her entire life perfecting her blood magic, building her network of spies, and gathering every scrap of power she could. Now, to protect her brother, she assassinates their father and takes her place at the head of the family. And that is only the start of her revenge.

Samuel Hutchinson is a bastard with a terrible gift. When he stumbles upon the first victim of a magical serial killer, he’s drawn into the world of magic and intrigue he’s worked so hard to avoid – and is pulled deeply into the ravenous and bloodthirsty court of the vampire king.

Tasked by the Eternal King to discover the identity of the killer cutting a bloody swath through the city, Samuel, Shan and mysterious Royal Bloodworker Isaac find themselves growing ever closer to each other. But Shan’s plans are treacherous, and as she lures Samuel into her complicated web of desire, treason and vengeance, he must decide if the good of their nation is worth the cost of his soul.

Mistress of Lies by K.M. Enright. Releases in June 2024 from Orbit Books. This cover is so pretty! And wait, there’s vampires. This is going to be a must read for me:-)

Octavia Butler meets Neil Gaiman in a tale about running from your past and hiding from your future.

The Water Wars have scrambled the world. Flood refugees are on the run. Disruptors and the Nostalgia Militia roam the roads wreaking havoc. Invisible Darknet lords troll the internet solidifying their power, while Cinnamon her three Circus-Bots, and two dogs, work with a community of Farmers, Motor Fairies and Wheel-Wizards to provide housing, healthcare and education for flood refugees.

Slipping into periodic despair, Cinnamon’s been hiding out. She’s ready to ditch the Next World Festival she runs―a sci-fi carnival jam featuring music, dance, masked revelers, drum circles and storytellers in a grassy amphitheatre on the farm she inherited. Her elders haunt her, insisting she do the Festival no matter what.

As she confronts threats to the life she’s attempting to live from the Darknet Lords and the Nostalgia Militia, Cinnamon must determine how best to honor her elders and her history, while building a future for herself and her charges.

It’s not going to be easy.

Archangels of Funk by Andrea Hairston. Releases in May 2024 from Tordotcom. Whoa, as I read this blurb, the story sounds better and better. A “sci-fi carnival jam featuring music, dance, masked revelers, drum circles and storytellers”? I don’t just want to read this book, I want to go to that jam!

Discover this creepy, charming monster-slaying fantasy romance—from the perspective of the monster—by Nebula Award-winning debut author John Wiswell

Shesheshen has made a mistake fatal to all monsters: she’s fallen in love.

Shesheshen is a shapeshifter, who happily resides as an amorphous lump at the bottom of a ruined manor. When her rest is interrupted by hunters intent on murdering her, she constructs a body from the remains of past meals: a metal chain for a backbone, borrowed bones for limbs, and a bear trap as an extra mouth.

However, the hunters chase Shesheshen out of her home and off a cliff. Badly hurt, she’s found and nursed back to health by Homily, a warm-hearted human, who has mistaken Shesheshen as a fellow human. Homily is kind and nurturing and would make an excellent co-parent: an ideal place to lay Shesheshen’s eggs so their young could devour Homily from the inside out. But as they grow close, she realizes humans don’t think about love that way.

Shesheshen hates keeping her identity secret from Homily, but just as she’s about to confess, Homily reveals why she’s in the area: she’s hunting a shapeshifting monster that supposedly cursed her family. Has Shesheshen seen it anywhere?

Eating her girlfriend isn’t an option. Shesheshen didn’t curse anyone, but to give herself and Homily a chance at happiness, she has to figure out why Homily’s twisted family thinks she did. As the hunt for the monster becomes increasingly deadly, Shesheshen must unearth the truth quickly, or soon both of their lives will be at risk.

And the bigger challenge remains: surviving her toxic in-laws long enough to learn to build a life with, rather than in, the love of her life.

Someone You Can Build a Nest In by John Wiswell. Releases in April 2024 from DAW Books. Wow. I am seriously in love with all three of these books. A monster name Shesheshen who wants to lay her eggs inside a human woman? But it’s a charming romance? I’ll definitely be reading this one.

  1. Okay so I should just add all 3 to my TBR. These Wednesday posts are so dangerous. But let’s just talk about Someone You Can Build a Nest In for a minute. Sounds like a horror, it says it’s a charming romance and the cover is giving me Middle Grade vibes. I’m confused – but then that’s easy to do this week. Great choices!

I know, Someone You Can Build a Nest In is confusing! I thought the same thing about the cover, very middle grade.

  2. I LOVE the sound of Someone You Can Build A Nest In! I’ve just looked it up and Jo Fletcher are publishing it this side of the pond. I’ll keep an eye out to see if I can get an arc, as the ebook is too expensive to spend on a new author… Thank you so much for sharing, Tammy!
