The Friday Face-Off: Recent Reads

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

For today’s Friday Face-Off, I’m sharing the U.S. and UK covers for three recent reads. I just couldn’t pick one! Take a look and let me know which covers you like best:

Schrader’s Chord by Scott Leeds, U.S. vs. UK covers

I love both these covers, so this is hard to call. Both use the vinyl record that the story revolves around and the red and black color scheme. But I’m giving the win to the U.S. cover. I like the title font better, and the record turning into a skull is a great image!

Black Sheep by Rachel Harrison, U.S. vs. UK covers

I love that both covers have an image of a black lamb, which is important to the story. I think in this case I’m partial to the UK cover. I love the red, which relates to the story better than the pink cover. By the way, I absolutely LOVED this book, so look for my review next week:-)

Starter Villain by John Scalzi, U.S. vs. UK covers

Two very different covers this time! I do like the artwork of the UK cover, but I just have to pick the U.S. cover as my favorite because it’s so ridiculous, and cats play a big part in the story.

  1. I really like both covers of Schrader’s Chord so if I were to buy it it would be hard to pick which cover I’d like. If I had to choose I’d say I’m leaning more towards the US cover.

The UK cover of Black Sheep is so freaky. I haven’t read it but what I know from it I think the red cover fits better too.

I agree with Starter Villain too. The artwork of the UK cover is great but I wouldn’t be able to resist a cat on a cover like that! 😛

  2. I almost have to go with the US covers on all three. I will admit that initially I liked the UK cover of Shrader’s Chord better but upon looking at it closer, it looks more like a CD and I believe it’s actual vinyl that plays a role in the story right? That’s JUST enough of a difference to bother me. Great covers this week though. And yes, the cat is definitely better!

I hadn’t noticed that about the UK Schrader’s Chord but you’re right. It definitely looks more like a CD.

  3. UK editions seem to love their black white red color scheme for some reason. I like the US version of Schrader’s chord more, but I like the UK version of Black Sheep. The US one doesn’t even look like a lamb!

  4. It’s US covers for all three for me. Like the skull on the Schrader’s Chord cover, like the pink on the Black Sheep cover (although the animal silhouette looks more like a cow to me), and love the kitty cat in a suit on the Scalzi cover.
