What’s On My Plate – July 2023

Happy July everyone! I can’t believe we’re halfway through 2023. And I feel like the best is yet to come, since I have so many highly anticipated books to read in the next six months. This month I’ve got lots of horror, a mystery and a couple of fantasy titles, so the month is definitely skewed towards horror, but I’m OK with that:-)

Here are the books I hope to read this month:

I’ve just finished Boys in the Valley by Philip Fracassi and it was really good. I’m still gathering my thoughts, but I should have a review up soon.

Burn the Negative by Josh Winning sounds very different from Winning’s last book, and I’m so curious to dive in!

Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. I’m always excited to see what Silvia Moreno-Garcia comes up with, and her latest promises to be very different from her other books.

Ever since I read Gallows Hill, I’ve been looking forward to more Darcy Coates, and Dead of Winter sounds so good. After that, Coates has a huge backlist I’d love to tackle:-)

The Deep Sky by Yume Kitasei. I’ve already got a date on the calendar for my review of this book: July 17th. Which means I need to read it soon!

Do you love Regency romance? Do you love dragons? Then you should check out Stephanie Burgis’s Regency Dragons series. Claws & Contrivances is book #2 and it’s going to be a lot of fun:-)

I’m in need of a Ronald Malfi fix—yes, I’m anxiously waiting for the announcement of his next novel—but in the meantime, I’m looking forward to checking out this collection of horror novellas, They Lurk.

Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle is a horror story that takes place at a gay conversion camp. I’m already intrigued by that idea, plus all the things I’ve heard about the author, this is bound to be a memorable read!

And let’s throw some epic fantasy into the mix with The Sun and the Void by Gabriela Romera Lacruz. This has been getting good reviews already, and I think I’ve recovered enough from reading Gods of the Wyrdwood to take on more fantasy;-)

And for something completely different, I can’t wait to read my first Samantha Downing book, A Twisted Love Story.

Finally, a humorous vampire story? Sure why not. Sucker by Daniel Hornsby promises a new take on vampires.

Do we have any July books in common? What is your most anticipated book of the month?

  1. A month skewed towards horror is a-ok with me. 🙂 I hope to finish The Strain trilogy this month, almost through the first book. Given that it’s a trilogy about vampires, I’ll be curious to hear about that comedic vampire story you’ve got lined up.

  2. I am also trying to figure out my thoughts to Boys. I liked it, but… Idk the ending was a little iffy for me? I LOVED Deep Sky, and I hope you do too! I liked Damascus too. I really want to read Dead of Winter! And Silver Nitrate! I hadn’t heard of Sucker, but that DOES sound fun! I will be checking that one out! Hope you really enjoy these!

I actually liked Boys in the Valley more once I went back and started writing my review. But yeah, the ending didn’t work that well for me either.

  3. July is going to be a craaaaaazy month for me! I think I have around 16-17 books on my must read list and there is zero chance I’ll finish them all, lol. Gonna do my very best though, and the books we share for July are Boys in the Valley, Camp Damascus, Silver Nitrate, A Twisted Love Story, and They Lurk.

I’m also trying to squeeze in some June books I missed. I won’t be able to get to my whole pile either…

  4. One of the other bookbloggers (at the moment, I can’t remember who) enjoyed “Boys in the Valley.”

I read and I enjoyed, “The Deep Sky”; and, my review will be posted soon.

I might have to squeeze in “Silver Nitrate” so I can read and review it before its release. And, I’m looking forward to reading, “The Sun and the Void.”

I’m so excited for Silver Nitrate. Not sure I’ll be able to read it before the release date, but I’ll definitely read it this month:-)
