Welcome to Over-Booked, where I share my latest and greatest book acquisitions! There is a new blog hosting Stacking the Shelves, so do check out Reading Reality for more information!
It’s been a month since my last book haul, so I have a good pile of new books to share. Let’s get right to it!
Books in the mail for review:
The Court of Shadows by Victor Dixen. I’m so intrigued by this book. Dixen is very popular in his native France, and this is the first English translation of this book. This is alternate history with vampires and is set during the Grand Siècle. This is the first in a series, and I can’t wait to check it out. Big thanks to Over the River PR for the review copy!
Big thanks to Orbit for this beautiful copy of The Sun and the Void by Gabriela Romera Lacruz. I’m hoping the story lives up to this pretty cover.
Marissa Lupe kindly offered me a copy of her upcoming book, Stars Like Acid, and it sounds like a fantastic science fiction story. Thank you Marissa!
Thank you to Tor for a gorgeous finished copy of The First Bright Thing by J.R. Dawson. I still plan on reading this, even though I set it aside.
I also received a copy of After the Forest by Kell Woods from Tor, huge thanks for this surprise! I’ve had my eye on this and I’m in love with the whimsical cover. This appears to be a Hansel and Gretel retelling and I think it sounds fantastic:-)
And finally from Wunderkind PR and Tor Nightfire, I was very happy to get a finished copy of Night’s Edge by Liz Kerin, which I really enjoyed.
Digital books for review:
The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins. I was excited to be offered a review copy of this book. I had a lot of fun with her last book, and this sounds really good as well.
They Lurk by Ronald Malfi. This book is on my Summer of Horror 2023 list, and it’s Ronald Malfi so really there’s nothing else to say!
A Haunting on the Hill by Elizabeth Hand. This is billed as an authorized return to Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, and I’m so curious to see what Hand does with it.
Good Girls Don’t Die by Christina Henry. I will never turn down a Christina Henry book, and although this seems different from her other books, I’m excited to dive in.
Claws & Contrivances by Stephanie Burgis. Stephanie is the sweetest person and offered me a review copy. This is the second book in her Regency Dragons series. I had a lot of fun with the first book, Scales & Sensibility, and this one comes out next month so I’ll be reading it soon.
Rouge by Mona Awad. I was surprised to be approved for this book, but I’m very happy I was. I’ve been meaning to read Mona Awad for a few years but just haven’t found the time.
Frost Bite by Angela Sylvaine and The Vein by Steph Nelson are upcoming releases from Sadie Hartman’s Dark Matter INK publishing company, and I’m thrilled to have copies of both books. They sound completely different from each other!
Big thanks to St. Martin’s Press, Titan Books, Mulholland Books, Berkley Books, Stephanie Burgis, Simon & Schuster, and Sadie Hartman:-D
I’m reading Claws and Contrivancies right now and I can tell you it’s just as much fun (if not a bit more…) than its predecessors. And if you like dragons, like me, you will certainly get your fill with this new book! 😉
Happy reading!

It definitely sounds like a book you might enjoy:-)

It was very good! Very very dark, but then I usually don’t mind dark;-)
Wow, I have no idea how you keep up! The Haunting on the Hill looks interesting — will definitely look forward to hearing what you think of it.
Luckily these are spread out through the rest of the year and into next year. It looks worse than it is, lol.
There are a lot of dark covers with red there.
Anne – Books of My Heart recently posted… The Sweetheart List by Jill Shalvis @JillShalvis @andi_arndt @WmMorrowBooks @avonbooks @HarperAudio #LOVEAUDIOBOOKS #JIAM
I hadn’t noticed that! But I do love when the covers all make sense together:-)
The Court of Shadows caught my eye for the vampires as I’m currently listening to the audio version of The Strain (the one they made a tv series about). And of course They Lurk caught my eye because, as you said, it’s Ronald Malfi. 🙂
I’m curious about The Strain. I have a copy of the book but haven’t read it.
You’ve had a great week of incoming books!! So many of them sound good and now I’m off to see which ones end up on my TBR.
Have a terrific week.

I know, it has the potential to be pretty unique!
Lots and lots of good books! The new Christina Henry one is on my TBR already. Hope you enjoy them all!

I’m sure I will, thanks Lashaan:-)
Looks like a great haul with some very pretty covers 😀
Looking forward to your thoughts on The Heiress and (especially) A Haunting on the Hill because a return to Hill House is definitely something I might be tempted to read.
I agree, a book that uses the original Hill House has got to be good!
Nice haul. Some interesting horror books.

Good Girls Don’t Die sounds like a really good one!
I got a lot of the same books, and I also finished The First Bright Thing. I understand why you set it aside, it was a bit hard to get into but did manage to finish it, and I thought it was just okay.
Ha good to know that the next Regency Dragons book is coming out soonish. I recently read the frist too!
