Future Fiction #232 – Cover Reveals & Newly Discovered SFF Books

Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D

Sooo many cover reveals hit last week! Today I’m focusing on the Tor Books imprints, since I’m excited for all of these, take a look:

Dinosaurs and portals, and a girl who can find both in the latest book in the Hugo and Nebula Award-Winning series.

Antsy is the latest student to pass through the doors at Eleanor West’s School for Wayward Children.

When her fellow students realize that Antsy’s talent for finding absolutely anything may extend to doors, she’s forced to flee in the company of a small group of friends, looking for a way back to the Shop Where the Lost Things Go to be sure that Vineta and Hudson are keeping their promise.

Along the way, temptations are dangled, decisions are reinforced, and a departure to a world populated by dinosaurs brings untold dangers and one or two other surprises!

A story that reminds us that finding what you want doesn’t always mean finding what you need.

Mislaid in Parts Half-Known (Wayward Children #9) by Seanan McGuire. Releases in January 2024 from Tordotcom. I never thought I’d see a Wayward Children book with dinosaurs on the cover, lol, but here you have it! This appears to be a direct sequel to Lost in the Moment and Found, which is unusual for this series. Most of the books jump around to different characters, so I’m glad McGuire is continuing Antsy’s story.

Anna has only two rules for the annual Pace family destination vacations: Tread lightly, and survive.

It isn’t easy, when she’s the only one in the family who doesn’t quite seem to fit. Her twin brother Benny goes with the flow so much he’s practically dissolved, and her older sister Nicole is so used to everyone—including her blandly docile husband and two kids—falling in line that Anna often ends up in trouble for simply asking a question. Mom seizes every opportunity to question her life choices, and Dad, when not reminding everyone who has paid for this vacation, just wants some peace and quiet.

The gorgeous, remote villa in tiny Monteperso seems like a perfect place to endure so much family togetherness–including Benny’s demanding new boyfriend (it’s Christopher, not Chris). That is, until things start going off the rails–the strange noises at night, the unsettling warnings from the local villagers, and, oh, the dark, violent past of the villa itself.

Jennifer Thorne skewers all-too-familiar family dynamics in this sly, wickedly funny vacation-Gothic. Beautifully unhinged and deeply satisfying, Diavola is a sharp twist on the classic haunted house story, exploring loneliness, belonging, and the seemingly inescapable bonds of family mythology.

(Warning: May invoke feelings of irritation, dread, and despair that come with large family gatherings.)

Diavola by Jennifer Thorne. Releases in March 2024 from Tor Nightfire. Scary cover, check. Remote, haunted villa, check. Dysfunctional family dynamics, check. This has all the makings for a fantastic Gothic horror story. I can’t wait.!

Bramble’s inaugural debut is equal parts steamy interstellar romance and sci-fi adventure, perfect for fans of Firefly and Ilona Andrews.

She’s got a ramshackle spaceship, a misfit crew, and a big problem with its sexy newest member…

Temperance Reed, banished from the wealthy and dangerous Fifteen Families, just wants to keep her crew together after their feckless captain ran off with the intern. But she’s drowning in debt and revolutionary new engine technology is about to make her beloved ship obsolete.

Enter Arcadio Escajeda. Second child of the terrifying Escajeda Family, he’s the thorn in Temper’s side as they’re sent off on a scouting mission on the backwater desert planet of Herschel 2. They throw sparks every time they meet but Temper’s suspicions of his ulterior motives only serve to fuel the flames between them.

Despite volcanic eruptions, secret cultists, and deadly galactic fighters, the greatest threat on this mission may be to Temper’s heart.

Calamity by Constance Fay. Releases in November 2023 from Bramble. This is Tor’s new romance imprint, and I’m very curious about it! I feel like speculative romance is having its day right now, with the success of titles like Fourth Wing. This sounds like fun, and Illona Andrews fans, take note!

  1. Nice! I love Seanan McGuire, so any new book of hers is one I’ll want to read. Diavola sounds deliciously creepy, and Calamity sounds like a lot of fun (you had me at “fans of Firefly”). Thanks for sharing!

  2. All fabulous-looking books and I found myself laughing aloud at the blurb for Diavola. Tordotcom just seem to go from strength to strength with their books, these days:)). Calamity is the one I’ll be checking out, though. Thank you for sharing these, Tammy.

  3. I can’t believe how behind I am on the Wayward Children books. I do love this cover and need to catch up if only to see why there are dinosaurs on this one. Diavola sounds awesome but very haunted. I’m all for dysfunctional families so bring it on!

  4. Huh, I hadn’t heard of Bramble before — now I need to know more! The new Wayward Children book will be a must for me — already preordered. 🙂 I loved Jennifer Thorne’s last book, so I think I’m going to need Diavola too. Great picks!

I just learned about it, it’s fairly new, and I think Calamity might be the first release.

  5. Starr

I am so glad to come across your website! I love meeting other women who love fantasy, sci-fi, and gothic reads. Seriously. It distractions my mind from the groundhogs day of life. Btw, did you read the book: Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno – Garcia?

    • Tammy

Thanks for visiting, Starr! Yes, I loved Mexican Gothic, she’s a favorite author of mine:-)

The cover of Diavola is definitely drawing a lot of attention! Here’s hoping the story is just as good:-)

  6. Omg, thanks for reminding me I still haven’t even read Lost in the Moment and Found! Here I thought I was all caught up and completely forgot about that one, haha. I love seeing dinosaurs on the cover for the latest one, haha. I’m in love with the cover for Diavola, it sounds fantastic. Calamity also sounds really intriguing. Great picks!

Definitely read Lost in the Moment and Found, because this one sounds like a direct sequel.

  7. Wow, I can’t believe there are now 9 books in the Wayward Children series. I haven’t even read the first one yet! It’s sitting in my TBR and I keep meaning to pick it up because it’s on the shorter side.

    • Tammy

Oh you’re right! Ha ha. I’m so curious about how she’s going to incorporate dinosaurs…
