Mothers in Speculative Fiction – A Mother’s Day List

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there! I’ve been reading a lot of books lately where mothers and motherhood feature prominently in the story, in both good and bad ways. I also have a bunch of books with “Mother” in the title. I thought I’d combine these two things and offer up some ideas for mother-centric books. I know I’ve barely scratched the surface, so please let me know if you have any other recommendations:-) I’m separating this into books I’ve read and books on my TBR. Take a look:

Books I’ve Read:

A House With Good Bones by T. Kingfisher. Sam returns to her childhood home in North Carolina to check on her mother, who has been acting “off.” Turns out mom knows something about the house that Sam doesn’t…

On the Savage Side by Tiffany McDaniel. A heroine addict destroys her two daughters lives by setting them on the same, horrific path. This is a devastating, unforgettable story.

All the Blood We Share by Camilla Bruce. The mother in this story, Elvira, finds herself in the middle of a bunch of serial killers: her husband, her daughter and her step son. Lots of bloody fun!

The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean. This is a wonderful, emotional story about a mother trying to protect her young son, despite strict societal rules that state he must be killed.

Just Like Home by Sarah Gailey. Vera returns home to care for her dying mother Daphne, but a host of old family secrets lie in wait, not to mention the fact that she must deal with her unhinged mother.

Just Like Mother by Anne Heltzel. A cult called the Mother Collective ensnares our main character Maeve, as the author explores some controversial themes and ideas about motherhood.

The Mother’s Wheel by Robin Kirk. In this stellar series closer, the mother in the title refers to a god who can change and influence events by “a turn of the wheel.”

Mothered by Zoje Stage. A woman struggling to pay her bills after losing her job during the Covid lockdowns agrees to let her mother move in with her to help out. What could possibly go wrong?

Books on my TBR:

Let me know some of your favorite mother-centric books:-D

  1. I started Mother Thing but ended up returned it to the library before I finished it. However, I liked what I read and need to check it back out again. I also really liked Just Like Mother.

  2. This is an amazing list! Not that all of these mothers are worthy of celebration… but I love the Mother’s Day spirit! I read The School for Good Mothers last year, which would definitely fit here (I actually really disliked it, but it goes well with some of these others!)

  3. A House With Good Bones is definitely one I want to read, and maybe All the Blood We Share too.
Hope you enjoy the ones you’ve yet to read 😀

  4. I just finished The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman and though I don’t know that it’s a mother-centric book, it does have a very strong motherly aspect to it, in a weird sort of way. Regardless, I loved it. 🙂 And I hope you have a fantastic Mother’s Day!
