Welcome to Future Fiction, my reimagining of the Waiting on Wednesday meme! There are so many amazing new books coming out, that I can no longer pick just one. My goal with Future Fiction is to share at least three new books each week, a combination of recent cover reveals and books that I’ve recently added to my TBR pile. I’m still going to be linking up with Wishful Endings/Can’t Wait Wednesday, and I also want to give a shout out to Jill at Breaking the Spine for starting the original Waiting on Wednesday meme. I hope you’ll find some new books to add to your TBR piles, and as always, I look forward to hearing what YOU’RE looking forward to:-D
Three exciting cover reveals, three amazing sounding stories, take a look:
A sweet sapphic romance takes a deadly dark turn in this sharp-as-a-knife novella from the New York Times bestselling author.
Rosemary meets Ash at the farmers’ market. Ash—precise, pretty, and practically perfect—sells bars of soap in delicate pastel colors, sprinkle-spackled cupcakes stacked on scalloped stands, beeswax candles, jelly jars of honey, and glossy green plants. Ro has never felt this way about another woman; with Ash, she wants to be her and have her in equal measure. But as her obsession with Ash consumes her, she may find she’s not the one doing the devouring…
Bloom by Delilah S. Dawson. Releases in October 2023 from Titan Books. I stumbled across this cover reveal by accident, and I’m so glad I did! This wasn’t even on my radar. I absolutely loved Dawson’s The Violence last year, and I cannot wait for her new book!
Quintus Shu’al is the world’s only navigating fox. He’s also in disgrace after leading an expedition to its doom a year earlier, with dozens of lives lost. Now Quintus has a chance to redeem himself by leading a brand-new expedition to the gates of hell. In return, he is promised the eventual truth of his origins and his solitary existence.
Those who will accompany Quintus are the Holy Priest Scipio Aemilanus; scholar Octavia Delphina, whose sister was lost in the first expedition; the twin raccoon cartographers Loci and Foci; and the powerful bison ambassador Walks Along Woman.
As the journey grows more perilous and the agendas of its members more sinister, Quintus must make an impossible choice between obtaining the secret of his creation, or sacrificing that possibility forever in order to seize his destiny.
The Navigating Fox by Christopher Rowe. Releases in September 2023 from Tordotcom. Not only is this cover stunning, but this is a story with animal characters! It’s been a while since I’ve read a book from an animal’s point of view, probably Feral Creatures was the last one I read. This is definitely a must read:-D
An eerie, atmospheric Polar Gothic following a Victorian explorer in search of his lost shipmate and his own redemption—from the author of the “vivid, immersive” (The Guardian) horror novel All the White Spaces.
William Day should be an acclaimed Arctic explorer. But after a failed expedition, in which his remaining men only survived by eating their dead comrades, he returned in disgrace.
Thirteen years later, his second-in-command, Jesse Stevens, has gone missing in the same frozen waters. Perhaps this is Day’s chance to restore his tarnished reputation by bringing Stevens—the man who’s haunted his whole life—back home. But when the rescue mission becomes an uncanny journey into his past, Day must face up to the things he’s done.
Abandonment. Betrayal. Cannibalism.
Aboard ship, Day must also contend with unwanted passengers: a reporter obsessively digging up the truth about the first expedition, as well as Stevens’s wife, a spirit-medium whose séances both fascinate and frighten. Following a trail of cryptic messages, gaunt bodies, and old bones, their search becomes more and more unnerving, as it becomes clear that the restless dead are never far behind. Something is coming through.
Where the Dead Wait by Ally Wilkes. Releases in December 2023 from Atria/Emily Bestler Books. I haven’t read this author before, but I’d love to try this one. Historical gothic horror?? This sounds amazing.
Where the Dead Wait sounds so good. There’s always room for more Gothic historical horror.
The Navigating Fox has such a pretty cover, I can’t stop looking at it 😀

That cover is mesmerizing, right?
I love the sound of The Navigating Fox – it’s nicely different and that cover is gorgeous:). The other two are clearly intriguing and powerful reads – but too scary! Thank you for sharing, Tammy.
I’m glad I had one non-scary book for you:-)
Ooh, Bloom looks and sounds so creepy and delicious! Will definitely have to check it out!
I know, I’m intrigued, it sounds very different!
The Navigating Fox sounds very interesting.

I agree, I’m so curious about the animal characters.
Oh my god, these all sound so good. I have to make sure to keep track of these ones! And I really love that cover for The Navigating Fox, it’s so gorgeous.
I know, The Navigating Fox definitely is one of my favorite covers so far this year:-)
These all sound intriguing! I hope you love them all.

Thanks Lisa:-)
A navigating fox, that sounds charming at first, but if I see it on your blog, I know things won’t end well, lol

I’ve only read one book but I loved it:-)
I think Where the Death Wait has a chilling cover!
It’s creepy, right? It makes me want to read the book so I can see what’s up with that hand…
Wow, the covers on these really do draw you in, don’t they? They all sound unique and interesting in their own way. 😮 Thanks for sharing, Tammy!
Thanks Lashaan, I’m excited about all of them:-)
I like how the cover for Where the Dead Wait looks both like someone coming out of a hole in the ice but also like a hand coming out of the pupil of an eye.
All three of these are new to me but sign me up. You know I love a book with animal characters. What a find! Can I just add that the cover of Dawson’s novella is EXTREMELY disturbing and beautiful both at the same time. Hope you love them all.
This line in the synopsis of Bloom gave me the actual CHILLS: “But as her obsession with Ash consumes her, she may find she’s not the one doing the devouring…” I so want to read this book now!
The cover of The Navigating Fox is definitely a stunner. And I’m already obsessed with the twin raccoon cartographers without even having met them. I just decided that 😛
Where the Dead Wait sounds really scary but also amazing?! Also the part of Jesse Stevens’s wife being a medium who’s seances both fascinate AND frighten. Yes please! And yet again the last sentence creeping me out but also drawing me in: “Something is coming through.” 😮

Where the Dead Wait and Bloom look awesome!
The Navigating Fox sounds really intriguing. In January I read Remarkably Bright Creatures, where one of the protagonists was actually an octopus and loved it, so I’m definitely up for more books where the main characters are animals.
All of these are new to me. I love the cover of the Navigating Fox & think it sounds really intrigue, especially with its unusual animal cast.
I am so curious about Bloom! I have enjoyed other books by Delilah, I am just not 100% on whether this is a “me” book yet? But I love the cover! I am really torn on whether I love or hate the cover of Fox haha. At first glance I loved it and was going to add it to my monthly recap post, but then the more I looked at it, the more it irked me? That said, I probably won’t read it because I am weird about animal stuff in that I find it boring heh. I do need Where the Dead Wait in my life though, no question! Awesome choices as always!
