Most Anticipated Books of 2023 – First Quarter

Welcome to my first “most anticipated” post of 2023! Looking ahead at upcoming book releases is one of my favorite things to do, and today I’m focusing on releases from the first quarter of the year: January, February and March. I’ll be sharing the top five books that I hope to read each month, then next quarter I’ll do a recap to see how I did.

At the end of this post you can see the results of my fourth quarter of 2022 reading (hint: it didn’t go very well, lol).

Here we go! Titles are linked to Goodreads if you’d like to learn more.

January 2023 Most Anticipated:

Episode Thirteen by Craig DiLouie. I’ve already read this, so I can cross it off the list. Each of DiLouie’s books are so different from each other, I’m always in awe of his stories. Catch my review on Thursday!

How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix. I’ve already ready this one too! I’ll just say one thing: creepy puppets…

Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett. I’ve already seen some rave reviews of this book, so I’m pretty sure I’m going to love it too:-)

Bad Cree by Jessica Johns sounds like a very good horror/thriller. I’m loving all the positive reviews on Goodreads so far.

The Villa by Rachel Hawkins is an interesting mix of influences: Fleetwood Mac, the Manson murders, and Mary Shelley. I’m curious to see how the author handles them!

February 2023 Most Anticipated:

Don’t Fear the Reaper (The Lake Witch Trilogy #2) by Stephen Graham Jones. It seems I’ve been waiting forever for this book! I checked Goodreads and I’ve had it shelved for over a year. This is the follow-up to My Heart is a Chainsaw, and I can’t wait to see where the story goes.

Sister, Maiden, Monster by Lucy A. Snyder. I’m always up for a cool sounding sci-fi horror story, and this sounds like fun!

World Running Down by Al Hess. I’ve had good luck lately with dystopian stories, and this one sounds fantastic.

Gothic by Philip Fracassi is a horror story that revolves around a haunted desk. That sounds so unusual, I can’t wait to try it:-)

Wild Massive by Scotto Moore. I’m seeing lots of mixed reviews on Goodreads for this book, but I’m still curious to read it. I haven’t read anything by Scotto Moore before, so we’ll see how it goes!

March 2023 Most Anticipated:

Infinity Gate by M.R. Carey. If I could only read one of the fifteen books in this post, it would probably be this one. I’m literally jumping for joy in anticipation of reading this!

Rubicon by J.S. Dewes. I’m sincerely grateful that I don’t have to choose, because I am so excited to read Rubicon! Not sure if this is the start to a series or a standalone, but I’m going to be reading this one early.

Hel’s Eight by Stark Holborn. I was surprised and blown away in 2021 when I read Holborn’s Ten Low. So the announcement of a follow-up book was such a happy surprise!

A House with Good Bones by T. Kingfisher. The prolific Kingfisher has at least two new books coming out this year, and this is the first. I swear March is shaping up to be an amazing month for new SFF!

Mothered by Zoje Stage. I’m actually planning on reading this in January, since the publicist requested an early review. I’ve had great luck with Stage’s books, and this will be my fourth book of hers.

So how did Q4 in 2022 go? Well, it wasn’t my best quarter (although I have a pretty good excuse). December was pretty much a bust as far as reading went. However, I would like to try to read all of the unread books below, some time this year.

What are your most anticipated books of the quarter? Do we have any in common?

  1. I’m curious about that haunted desk in Gothic. I can fully understand why Wayward would’ve been one of the books you weren’t able to get to given its length. I’m listening to the audiobook now and it clocks in at over 34 hours. 🙂 But I’m enjoying being back in that world and seeing what other twists Wendig has in store. It is a little slower than the first book, though, or at least starts out that way.

I’m glad you’re listening to Wayward, I need to set aside a chunk of time and just read it:-)

  2. I would have skipped right by The Villa, if not for your mention of Fleetwood Mac! I’m intrigued — can’t wait to hear what you think after you read it! I hope to start Episode 13 later this week, and am definitely looking forward to House with Good Bones. Good luck! Hope you enjoy all these!

  3. I’m really looking forward to Brent Weeks’ new Night Angel book, but would like to read Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries too.

  4. I have many of these to read as well. The last six months I have been slacking in putting up my anticipated lists, I gotta start doing them again, if for no other reason because they help focus my reading!

  5. I’m also still waiting to get a hold of LAVENDER HOUSE… my bff already read it on my recommendation so I’d like to catch up, haha. EMILY WILDE is on my radar – love seeing the buzz that book is getting! I really enjoyed one of Fawcett’s MG books, so I’m looking forward to her adult debut.

  6. I’ll definitely be curious to see what you think of The Villa. I didn’t know about the Mary Shelley and Fleetwood Mac influences when I read it, which makes the story all the more intriguing for me after the fact.

  7. oooh Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries’s looks and sounds like it’s going to be amazing – I need to add that to my list

  8. How many interesting books!! At the moment I am reading Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries and my next reading would be World Running Down (I can’t wait to start that one!), and I am coveting Rubicon. But all the other books you mentioned sound intriguing too!
