Big thanks to Mayri at Bookforager for reminding me about this SciFiMonth prompt! I’ve put my own spin on it, and I’m highlighting my favorite SF book from each of the last ten years, 2013 through 2022. This was hard! As you can imagine, there are multiple favorites each year, so picking just one was agonizing in some cases. Some of these choices might surprise you, since a few books could be considered “under the radar.” Still, this was a lot of fun. No commentary, but I am linking my reviews if you’re interested. Here we go!

2013The Mad Scientist’s Daughter by Cassandra Rose Clarke

2014The Martian by Andy Weir

2015Afterparty by Daryl Gregory

2016Dark Matter by Blake Crouch

2017Borne by Jeff VanderMeer

2018 The Sky is Yours by Chandler Klang Smith

2019A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World by C.A. Fletcher

2020The Phlebotomist by Chris Panatier

2021The Fall of Koli by M.R. Carey

2022Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel

What do you think of my picks? Have you read any of these books?

The Mad Scientist’s Daughter!! I love that book so much. The first audiobook I listened to when I joined AR originally way back when. What an honour to have it – and The Phlebotomist – included!

  2. I’ve read the Martian and the Dark Matter from your list. I enjoyed them both so I guess I need to check out the others, too. I’ve read others from Vandermeer but not Borne.

  3. Wow, hard to believe The Martian was out in 2014. Doesn’t seem like that long, and I was new to blogging then! Dark Matter is one of my favorite books so yeah to that one. 🙂

Vandermeer’s stuff is so wild- after I read one of his books I’m always like- what did I just read? 🙂

Right? Time flies… And yes I agree. Vandermeer is actually hit or miss with me. I loved Borne, but a few others have been DNFs for me.

  4. The only one I’ve read so far is The Martian and I can understand why that one made it as a favorite that year. Such a great story.

  5. A Boy And His Dog.. was such a good read.
I really must get around to reading another Blake Crouch, it’s been a while.
Have just started Sea of Tranquility and I can’t wait to get back to it 😀

I’m looking forward to your thoughts on Sea of Tranquility! It’s one of the best books of the year, IMO.

  6. Surprisingly, considering I don’t feel like I read enough sci-fi, I’ve read and loved six of these – which was a very pleasant surprise. I should try to read The Mad Scientist’s Daughter, I’m sure I already have a copy – and the Blake Crouch.
    Lynn 😀

  7. Great picks! The only one I’ve read is the Martian, but the Mad Scientist’s Daughter sounds interesting and I’ve always liked the cover of the Phlebotomist.

  8. Not only have I not read any of these books but I haven’t read anything by the authors either which feels pretty terrible considering how popular some of them are. At least I have a few good starting points for the genre though. I didn’t realise Cassandra Rose Clarke had a sci fi book, I have a few fantasy novels by her on my TBR.
