The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
Today’s theme is “witches,” and I tried so hard to find a witch-centric book that I’ve read that I haven’t used in previous Friday Face-Offs, and just couldn’t! So I’ve chosen a “to be read” book, The Witch in the Well by Camilla Bruce, which I hope to read by the end of October. Only two covers so far, so we have a real face-off today. Take a look:

Tor Books, 2022. I love this cover because it’s hard to tell what’s going on, which makes it very creepy and mysterious! This is my favorite.

UK edition, 2022 (Transworld Digital). This has a completely different vibe, and I like it as well. I’ll be curious to read the book and see which cover works the best:-)

Where is the review of Leech?
Oh, it’s coming!
I prefer the first cover for the reasons you mentioned, it’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on and that contributes to the feel of it. But I agree that second cover is also well designed.
Honestly, neither cover gives you an idea of what the story’s about, but I guess we’ll see:-)
Both covers are great, but I like the UK one better because it’s got a folk horror vibe to it.
It definitely has that! I’ll be curious to see if the vibe fits the story.
I just don’t know on this one, not real sure I like either one…lol.
LOL I know what you mean. Neither one is mind blowing;-)
i really do look forward to this. And such completely different covers.
Lynn 😀
I can’t wait to start it:-)
The first one is my winner!
Me too!
I prefer the mystery and menace of the first cover, which is a more sophisticated treatment – but I think both are good.
Good point, that first cover does make you feel a bit uncomfortable.
I’m all about the Tor cover! The second one feels to me too stuffy/formal – it doesn’t appeal to my aesthetic sense, haha.
