Buffy’s Corner 8/14/22 – Looking at the Week Ahead

Welcome to Buffy’s Corner, where I take a look at what’s coming up this week on the blog! I’m linking up with The Sunday Post over at Kimberly’s blog, The Caffeinated Reviewer:-D

Hubby is back from Costa Rica with over 9,000 photos, lol. I’ll put a few of my favorites at the end of this post. The weather here continues to be dreadful, temps in the 90s for about three weeks straight and still no relief in sight. Ah, summer:-)

Has everyone seen the new Goodreads book page layout? I’m still trying to decide if I like it or not. All the information I use is still there, but it’s in different places so I need to work with it a bit more to figure things out. One change I do like, though, is that book cover images are available in high resolution, and they weren’t before (at least for most books). If you right click on the book cover and choose “open image in new tab” you’ll get a nice, high res image. I believe this works on phones as well. Maybe this has always been the case, but I love it, especially since I never used Goodreads book cover images before, because I don’t like blurry images on my blog.

Upcoming reads & reviews:

I had a blast with The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy! My review will be up tomorrow. I’m currently reading and hoping to finish Eversion and post a review later in the week. It’s early days still, but I’m curious to see how this story unfolds. I’m about a third of the way through The Devil Takes You Home, and to be honest the story isn’t really grabbing me. I do want to give it a chance, though, because I keep hearing good things. And my next read might be Sallow Bend, which is a September 2nd release, and I want to review it prior to that date.

Other posts this week:

On Wednesday, stop by for Future Fiction, where I’ll share three new cover reveals or books I’ve discovered; The Friday Face-Off is “scantily dressed,” that should be interesting:-) And I’ve received a fair amount of new books so look for a book haul post on Saturday.

In case you missed:

My posts from last week:

  1. The Costa Rica photos, gasp! So cool!

Don’t you love the title The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy? I have also heard wonderful things about The Devil Takes You Home. I also heard that there are political viewpoints expressed, so maybe that is what’s bothering you.

Thanks Priscilla! I need to finish The Devil Takes You Home so I can figure out what I like or don’t like about it, lol.

  2. Oh my…those pics! Those funny, adorable animals! Even the basilisk looks cute (sort of LOL). And 9000 photos?!? I assume your husband is selling a good number of them?

The temps let up a little here, and it should rain tomorrow. Let’s hope your corner of the woods will get a respite soon…

Those are all digital photos, and he goes through and only picks the best ones:-) He takes so many!

  3. AAAw these White bats!! Also I tested the beta version on Goodreads but now they got me back to the old version and I want to new one back!

  4. Like you I have mixed feelings about the Goodreads change. Some aspects I really like, others might take a little getting used to. I do find it more difficult to find how folks I follow feel about a book. It’s right there, but as you said in a different place. And I may be missing it completely, but I can’t find where the normal book page shows any current giveaways for that book as it used to. Overall, though, it is a cleaner look, which I like.

Those Costa Rican photos are absolutely incredible. I love this set. The pose of the lizard is great, with its head held high, and what detail along its body. The bats are incredible, never seen any so small. And the pair of Jacamars, just wow!

Thanks Todd! It’s funny how he saw so many different birds and animals than he did during his first trip:-)

  5. 9000! Wow. Can’t wait to see some of those. 🙂 Costa Rica would be heaven for photography, I would think.

Can’t wait to start Eversion. I have hopes for that one. And that’s good to know about the Goodreads changes. I saw someone on Twitter remarking about it yesterday but haven’t been there yet. Good to know about the high res images though since I do use GR images fairly often…

I’m finishing up Eversion and it’s very weird! I think Goodreads is doing a slow roll out of the new version.

      • The only book I’ve read by him before was PErmafrost, but I liked it. I think from what I’ve heard though that it was kinda different from a lot of his space operas or whatever, and sounds like this one might be kinda different too.,

  6. My initial reaction to the new Goodreads look is NO. It makes the page feel much more like an Amazon page geared to sales than keeping the focus on the book and the reviews (but I suppose that’s maybe the point). I always got my book cover images from Goodreads in the past — you used to be able to hover over the image and select “enlarge” to get a really good image to download and use. I suppose there’s no option except getting used to the new one, but sigh… why change something that was working?

I just finished Hart & Mercy too! Going to finish up my review, hopefully today. We’ll have to compare notes!

    Have a good week!

Exactly, it screams “buy this book!” right? It seems OK to me, at least they didn’t take away things I use all the time, like the publisher information and different editions. But it’s also harder to see your friends’ reviews.

  7. Awesome pics as always. Robin liked the Megan Bannen book but I don’t think it’s for me. I’ve certainly had times when it took 30-50% to really get into a story which is very hard. I usually read easily but I wonder if it’s the book or me, or just some personal preference thing. It could be I’m just distracted when I start the book. I hope you have some cooler weather. We are finally having some.

He’s already planning his next trip, lol. I’m content to just stay home with the dog and read:-)

  8. OMG, more gorgeous pictures!!
    I’m also curious about Eversion!
The final release of this new Goodreads is much better than the first time they released it, they did correct lots of bugs.
Actually, the resolution really depends on who uploads the picture of a book. When I do, I always use the picture of the publisher, but looks like some people don’t.
    Enjoy your week!

Thanks Emma! That’s why I usually grab book covers from Edelweiss, as they are all high res images. (although not all books are listed there)

  9. I hate the new goodreads layout on the book page, it’s the only thing that looks different and I don’t know why they changed it. Took me a while to figure out how to review my book when I was on it,
    Those pics are awesome!!!!

Have a great week and happy reading!

I sort of agree, that new page makes me think I’m on Amazon. I’m not sure why they did it either…

  10. My first reaction to the new GR’s page was – why? But then I think they like to keep us on our toes. We’ll get used to it quickly enough and you can still get the same info – it just takes a little while to find it until you get familiar.
    Beautiful photos.

    • Tammy

Exactly. Change isn’t my favorite thing but eventually we’ll forget what the old page even looked like.

  11. Wow, hubby’s photos are amazing. I never thought I’d hear myself say bats are adorable, but how cute are those? I didn’t even notice that anything on Goodreads was different, so I’m not sure what that says about me, haha.

    • Tammy

You may not have the new page yet, I think I heard they were “rolling it out.” And I agree, those bats are super cute!
