This is an exciting year for the wonderful folks in charge of the Wyrd & Wonder event—it’s the fifth anniversary! This is my fourth year participating, and although it’s not my complete focus this month, I do have a handful of fantasy books I plan to read and review, as well as some lists (you know I love a good list!). I will also have a giveaway at the end of the month that will be fantasy related, so keep in touch so you don’t miss any details.

Before we get started, big thanks to this year’s five hosts, who somehow manage to wrangle all of us participants and work so hard behind the scenes. Big shout out to Imyril, Lisa, Jorie, Ariana and Annemieke for taking on hosting duties!

I’m dividing this post up into two sections: First, my Wyrd & Wonder reading and plans, and second, the rest of the books I’ll try to read that fall into other genres. May is absolutely out of control. For some reason, every publisher out there decided May was THE month to release all the books, and here I am with a ridiculous TBR. Obviously I won’t be able to read everything, but here is what I’ll be choosing from:

Wyrd & Wonder reading:

I’m very excited about this Wyrd & Wonder TBR. I was hoping to have already read Book of Night by Holly Black, but it’s short and I will probably start it soon. The Hourglass Throne by K.D. Edwards is also coming up soon on the pile, I can’t wait:-)

Seasonal Fears by Seanan McGuire is a book I’ve been anticipating for quite a while, and I’m curious to see how it links up with Middlegame.

As for big epic fantasy, I hope to tackle The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah, which I’ve been hearing amazing things about so far.

Siren Queen by Nghi Vo is the follow-up to The Chosen and the Beautiful, which I loved.

On the lighter side, From Bad to Cursed by Lana Harper sounds like a lot of fun, and Darling Girl by Liz Michalski sounds like a rather dark Peter Pan retelling, but it’s being described as “magical” as well.

Wyrd & Wonder Extras:

In addition to reviews, look for these posts during the month of May:

The rest of May:

Luckily I have a slight jump on this pile. I’ll probably be finished with A Sh*tload of Crazy Powers by Jackson Ford by the time this post goes up, and I’m nearly finished with Mercury Rising by R.W.W. Greene. Both are fantastic, so stand by for reviews soon!

Glitterati by Oliver Langmead is the newest book by a favorite author, and so far Langmead has yet to disappoint me.

I have quite a few darker reads planned, like Black Tide by K.C. Jones, Just Like Mother by Anne Heltzel, The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas and Hide by Kiersten White. I’m very curious about all of these!

Under Fortunate Stars by Ren Hutchings sounds like a very fun space opera. I’m also hoping to squeeze in Pteranodon Canyon by Tim Meyer. It’s already been released so I’m behind, but I can’t wait to read it.

I’m going to be on the blog tour for Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak, another dark thriller that sounds fantastic.

Finally, I have two short story collections to tackle: Boys, Beasts & Men by Sam J. Miller, which is actually a June release but I’m throwing it up here and hoping to start it early. And Future Artifacts by Kameron Hurley. It’s been a long time since I’ve read anything by Hurley so I’m very curious.

And there you have it, my rather ambitious reading plans for May! Let me know if you’re also participating in Wyrd & Wonder, and I’d love to hear what your most anticipated book of May is:-D

  1. Wyrd & Wonder is back! Even though I have no firm plans for the month, I know I’m going to enjoy it 🙂
The Stardust Thief is a book that already caught my attention, but I have no idea if I will be able to fit it into my overblown TBR… only time will tell 😉

  2. Yay for Wyrd and Wonder!! And you are looking forward to so many amazing and interesting books!!! And lists… They are simply too good to resist!!
And I hope to read The Hourglass Throne for Wyrd and Wonder too!!

  3. I’ll probably be reading fantasy all month anyway. The Faithful and the Fallen series is huge and taking up all of my reading time. I’m excited to hear your thoughts on quite a few of these! I for sure want to pick up Stardust Thief, Hacienda, Black Tide, and Hide at some point. But there are a few here that didn’t make my May list I’d really love to hear more about. Looking forward to your stuff!

So exciting! I always love your lists so I am very keen for those!! Good luck with your TBR, it seems like a good selection to choose from!

Thank you! I do like lists, hopefully there will be something new for you to add to your TBR:-)

  5. I don’t even know what to say to all these incredible looking books, other than good luck and I look forward to hearing about them all! 🙂

  6. I’m not participating in W&W (I tend not to do challenges), but I always enjoy seeing everyone else’s reading lists! We have a handful of books in common for May. I’m most looking forward to The Book of Night, and I know I should be excited for Seasonal Fears, but for whatever reason I’m feeling a bit intimidated at the thought of starting it. Good luck with your challenge!

  7. I’m so excited for Wyrd and Wonder even though I’ve never done it. I think I might jump in this year if time allows. Between this and SciFi Month in November I feel like there are two really cool events now nicely spaced out. 🙂

I’m looking forward to Black Tide.

I agree, it’s nice to have two different genre events spread out through the year:-) Hope you join in, Greg!

  8. Looks like you have a lot of potentially great reads coming up. Book of Night is up next for me and I can’t wait! I also ordered The Hacienda as my May BOTM pick because I thought that sounded so good.

  9. Every time I visit your blog, I feel like I’m introduced to the most striking SFF covers! JUST LIKE MOTHER and HIDE are ones I’ll have to look into… I’m currently working my way through SIREN QUEEN – I think you’ll en joy it. Happy Wyrd & Wonder 😀

  10. You’ve got quite a list there! I also love making reading lists, even if I always tend to put on more than I can read, but then hey, at least I’m never going to be stuck when it comes to choice! I just started the Holly Black book, and it’s not what I expected, but it’s going okay!

  11. Good luck with your plans. I’m trying to keep things loose (particularly as I’ve got so hideously behind with everything else going on). Hopefully I’ll be able to read like a maniac and catch up.
    Lynn 😀
