This week’s theme: Most recent read
I recently read and reviewed The Kaiju Preservation Society and it already has three different covers to compare. It doesn’t even come out until next week, but that’s the power of John Scalzi:-) Take a look:
Tor Books U.S. edition 2022. When I first saw this cover, it seemed a little bland to me. A story about kaiju but no kaiju on the cover? But after reading the book, it makes sense. I actually like this “no kaiju on the cover” version, and if you read the book you’ll see what I mean. Basically, Scalzi barely describes his kaiju at all, but leaves it up to the reader’s imagination.
Tor UK edition 2022. This is my favorite. I love the color scheme, and I love the representation of the kaiju surrounded by the jungle. The lightning strikes around the edges suggest the thin veil between our Earth and Kaiju Earth.
Hungarian edition 2022. Another interesting cover! I actually like the simplicity of this one, and the helicopters in the background are a nice touch since they place a big part in the story.
The Tor UK edition 2022 is my favorite too. I really love the colors as well!

They are so vibrant:-)
I actually like the “bland” one the best. It hints at a rough and dangerous travel adventure with the ID tag and the blood and the scuff marks.
It does pique my interest for sure!
I really like the second one, especially after reading your review of the book itself and learning how vague the kaiju descriptions are. I like to have the visual of the kaiju but love that it’s just a shadowy silhouette so that my imagination can fill in the gaps.
I agree, we all know sort of what a kaiju looks like, but it’s nice to use your imagination as well:-)
All of them look good to me!
I think he got very lucky with the covers:-)
I also prefer the first one, and Priscilla’s explanation says it all.
Mine could also be considered a type of kaiju?

I do like the mystery of the first cover.
The last one is my favorite, it’s just nice to actually see Kaiju on the cover! 😀

I agree!
I am 100% team Tor UK on this one. That cover is so eye-catching and gives me Jurassic Park vibes?? Not that that matters to me, but I love it. So happy I prefer the UK cover for a book I wanna pick up, for once. xD
Oh definitely Jurassic Park vibes!
I like those first two. The idea of a Kaiju Earth appeals to me!

It was a really cool idea:-)
I like all of them but the Tor UK is my favorite.
Mine too:-)
I like the US edition with that little blood spatter on the badge.
I do too. It’s pretty evocative:-)
I do like the UK color scheme as well, I feel like it’s not a common one. I really like the US one as well! I like the simplicity of the Hungarian one, but it has such a different vibe from the others for some reason.
I would say the Hungarian cover is my least favorite.
I haven’t read it, but I prefer the one with no kaiju on the cover because it makes me wonder what it is.
It does leave a lot to the imagination.
I love the two final covers – so dramatic. The bottom one makes me smile and the middle just really grabs your attention. Difficult to choose between the two.
Lynn 😀
