The Friday Face-Off: Shades of Gray

The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!

This week’s theme: A book with a gray cover.

One of the best “gray” books I’ve read is The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher, and today I’ve got a head to head comparison since I could only find two covers. Take a look:

Gallery/Saga Press, U.S. edition 2020. I love this cover! The uprooted tree hovering over a foggy gray landscape is super eerie, and it represents this odd story perfectly. This is definitely my favorite cover!

Titan Books UK edition 2020. Here’s another great cover, and the animal skull under glass also gives you some hints into the story, so in that respect it works really well. I love this, but my favorite is still the first one.

Which cover do you like best? Have you read The Hollow Places?

  1. What an interesting variation in the covers! I prefer the first one, because I spent more time looking at it. There seem to be shapes within the grey mist/fog/background that I found I was trying to pick out… And it’s a Kingfisher book that I haven’t read – though it looks like it’s horror, so I think I’ll pass at the moment. Though this is one of my favourite authors at the moment:)). Great choice, Tammy:)).

  2. That’s a tough pick. They’re both strong covers. But I think I agree with you. I like the simplicity of the first cover with the floating tree and nothing else but water and fog.
