The Friday Face-Off was created by Books by Proxy, where each week bloggers can showcase books with covers centered around a weekly theme. You can visit Lynn’s Books for a list of upcoming themes. Join in the fun each Friday by finding a book whose cover is based on the theme!
This week’s theme: A book with a gray cover.
One of the best “gray” books I’ve read is The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher, and today I’ve got a head to head comparison since I could only find two covers. Take a look:
Gallery/Saga Press, U.S. edition 2020. I love this cover! The uprooted tree hovering over a foggy gray landscape is super eerie, and it represents this odd story perfectly. This is definitely my favorite cover!
Titan Books UK edition 2020. Here’s another great cover, and the animal skull under glass also gives you some hints into the story, so in that respect it works really well. I love this, but my favorite is still the first one.
What an interesting variation in the covers! I prefer the first one, because I spent more time looking at it. There seem to be shapes within the grey mist/fog/background that I found I was trying to pick out… And it’s a Kingfisher book that I haven’t read – though it looks like it’s horror, so I think I’ll pass at the moment. Though this is one of my favourite authors at the moment:)). Great choice, Tammy:)).
I love how atmospheric that first cover is. Of the two, it’s definitely the one that would make me pick up this book if I saw it in a bookstore.
Both covers are nice, but I love the eerie vibe of the first cover!

I’m with the UK. The fog atmosphere, but I love the skull the in the glass and that saying on the cover, ‘pray that they are hungry” is hella creepy.

I really like both, but prefer the foggy cover.
The second cover is so intriguing, but I also prefer the first one, for its eeriness.

Ahhh I don’t know which one I like more. They’re really great covers so I’m just gonna go with BOTH!

I definitely prefer the UK version. 🙂
Oh I like the UK version! The US is good too.
That’s a tough pick. They’re both strong covers. But I think I agree with you. I like the simplicity of the first cover with the floating tree and nothing else but water and fog.
I like the first one too, but the second is definitely more interesting!
I love that first cover, but the second one with the animal skull (which I haven’t seen) is awesome.
These are both so interesting. I love that first one though.
The US edition cover has a fantastic ominous vibe, but I prefer the aesthetic of the UK edition. I love a bell jar filled with unusual items! 😀
The second one is definitely curious but I like the first, perhaps it’s because it’s the one I’m most familiar with.
