What’s On My Plate – January 2022

Happy New Year’s, everyone! It’s the start of a new year, that time when everything is possible and the year stretches out before you with so many possibilities. Despite &$#@& Covid still being a huge presence (and didn’t we all think it would be over by now?), I hope this year is a good one! At least we have books to keep us happy, right? Sorry, I can’t resist sharing this New Year’s cartoon, lol:

Here are the books I’d love to read this month (and some I already have!):

Deep Dive by Ron Walters. I have already read this and loved it! It was so immersive, I could not put it down and read it in only two days (fast for me). I will be on the Angry Robot blog tour on the 11th with a guest post from Ron, and I’ll be posting my review on the 10th.

Goliath by Tochi Onyebuchi. I’ve been waiting a couple of years for Onyebuchi’s next book after loving Riot Baby, and here it is!

Such a Pretty Smile by Kristi DeMeester. I just received a review copy of this book and I’m excited to dive in. I’ve heard DeMeester’s name around the horror community, and I’m looking forward to checking out her work.

The Starless Crown by James Rollins. I’ve started this and read a handful of chapters, and so far it’s intriguing. It’s very long, though, so I’m hoping the pace picks up a bit. Right now it’s on the slow side.

Devil House by John Darnielle. This is a story about a true crime writer who agrees to move into a murder house to research the truth behind the crime. Sounds like fun!

Where the Drowned Girls Go by Seanan McGuire. This is the 7th book in McGuire’s Wayward Children series of novellas, and I enjoyed it! Look for my review on Monday.

Battle of the Linguist Mages by Scotto Moore. I’m a little wary of this because ratings are quite low over on Goodreads right now. Yikes, I guess I’ll make up my own mind:-)

The Amber Crown by Jacey Bedford. This will be my first time reading this author, and I’m looking forward to it!

The Wakening by J.G. Faherty. I’ve actually started this book, and it’s a demon possession story with multiple timelines. So far it’s very good.

Cold the Night, Fast the Wolves by Meg Long. I’ve seen a couple of rave reviews for this already, so I’m very much looking forward to it.

Temple of No God by H.M. Long. This is the second book in Long’s Hall of Smoke series. I really loved the first book, so this should be fun.

In Every Generation by Kendare Blake. I’ve already read this and I’m afraid I was mostly disappointed. For true Buffy diehard fans, it doesn’t really cut it. I would say if you are a casual fan you will enjoy it, but I know just about every line in every episode by heart, and Blake does some weird things with dialog in this story that I didn’t like. Look for my review in a couple of weeks and I’ll explain more!

Engines of Empire by R.S. Ford. I feel like January is the month of the epic fantasy, lol. I have so many to read! I’ve heard good things about this, and I hope to start it soon.

The Beholden by Cassandra Rose Clarke. I requested this because I love the author, but it’s getting pretty low ratings on Goodreads, so now I’m worried. At 544 pages, I probably won’t prioritize this, we’ll see how the month goes.

Are you planning on reading any of these books? Which book are you most excited to read in January?

  1. Happy new year! Looking forward to all those reviews (especially the sci-fi ones). I ordered McGuire’s book and have read Deep Dive – not what you would call “in love” with it, but I did like it!

  2. What a lovely looking batch of books. I love the sound of Cold the Night, Fast the Wolves – it’s positively calling to me. ‘The Children of the Night, what music they make’ – sorry, can’t resist any opportunity for a quote.

  3. Oh no, your thoughts here on In Every Generation have me scared! I guess I’m just hoping it will give me some of the enjoyment I had and loved with BTVS. Bring back some of that love I had for the show that I miss so much! I will be reading it later this week. I love the cartoon at the top, so true. But there’s that pesky covid hanging on to the 2@@@@!!!!

Some reviewers are rating it really high, so you never know! I’m super picky when it comes to Buffy so I’m being a little harsher than I normally would be.

  4. I got an arc of The Beholden but it won’t go on either of my ereaders and I can’t open on the computer either. The publisher isn’t replying to me so I guess I’m going to let that one slide.
Super excited for The Battle of the Linguest Mages but I need to prioritize a few other arcs first.

Yes I think many of us thought covid would be far away from us now but… sadly it’s not.
I’m so excited for Goliath! Like you I really liked Riot Baby and I’m excited to read another book by him! 😀
