I’m kicking off my Sci Fi Month lists with one of my favorites, a list of twelve upcoming 2022 adult SF releases that I’m super excited to read! Of course, this is just a partial list of all the many books you can expect to see next year, and I am only sharing books that already have covers. Right now, these twelve are firmly on my TBR! I’m listing these in order of release date, and you can click on the titles to read the full Goodreads description. Here we go!
1.
Battle of the Linguist Mages by Scotto Moore. January 11th from Tordotcom. This might be a mix of fantasy and sci-fi, but I’m adding it to this list because it’s giving me SF vibes. This story sounds crazy, but good. It sounds crazy good!
2.
Deep Dive by Ron Walters. January 11th from Angry Robot. This sci-fi thriller sounds like fun, and it involves video game design and alternate realities. Can’t wait!
3.
Goliath by Tochi Onyebuchi. January 25th from Tordotcom. A future world where those with privilege have left Earth to colonize a new planet, but those without are left behind. It seems like this might follow the same narrative structure as Onyebuchi’s Riot Baby, which I really loved.
4.
Hunt the Stars (Starlight’s Shadow #1) by Jessie Mihalik. February 1st from Harper Voyager. I’m so excited for a new Jessie Mihalik series! I had a blast with her Consortium Rebellion series, and this sounds like it’s going to be an enemies to lovers story.
5.
Sisters of the Forsaken Stars (Our Lady of Endless Worlds #2) by Lina Rather. February 15th from Tordotcom. I loved the first book, Sisters of the Vast Black, and I think at the time it was just a standalone. I’m glad Rather decided to write a sequel!
6.
Mickey7 by Edward Ashton. February 15th from St. Martin’s Press. “The Martian meets Dark Matter.” SOLD. I cannot wait to read this, it sounds like a blast!
7.
The Paradox Hotel by Rob Hart. February 22nd from Ballantine Books. “A locked room murder mystery set at a hotel for time travelers.” I mean, come on! How can you not want to read that?
8.
The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi. March 15th from Tor Books. Scalzi uses the Covid-19 pandemic to weave a tale about alternate dimensions and giant, dinosaur-sized kaiju. I can hardly wait to read this!
9.
Until the Last of Me (Take Them to the Stars #2) by Sylvain Neuvel. March 29th from Tordotcom. This is an unusual series, a mash-up of historical and science fiction. I really enjoyed the first book and I’m definitely curious to keep reading!
10.
Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel. April 19th from Knopf. Another pandemic story (I guess 2022 is the Year of the Pandemic Stories?) but hey, this is Emily St. John Mandel, and I will read anything she writes.
11.
Prison of Sleep (Journals of Zaxony Delatree #2) by Tim Pratt. April 26th from Angry Robot. I adored Doors of Sleep earlier this year, and I am beyond excited to read this book!
12.
A Half-Built Garden by Ruthanna Emrys. July 26th from Tordotcom. This is a first contact story that also deals with climate change, and it sounds like it’s going to be really good.
Going back to the world of Sisters of the Vast Black will fulfill one of my reading wishes, since I wanted to know more about that universe. And of course anything Scalzi writes I HAVE TO read – period 🙂
I’m so excited to see where she takes her sisters next:-)
Ooooo I hadn’t seen the Prison of Sleep cover yet!! Several good ones on here that I’m looking forward to already! I’m maybe a little surprised you didn’t include Dead Silence, but there are just so many to choose from, I bet you could’ve made the list 30 titles and still not had enough room;)
I just included Dead Silence on my last horror list, so I figured I highlight some other books instead. But def super excited for it!
Without a doubt I am most looking forward to Sisters of the Forsaken Stars. I can’t wait to read that one and have it on pre-order. I was impressed with how immersed I became in the world, characters and story of Sisters of the Vast Black given its short length.
Exactly, I was so impressed by how well it worked even though it was short.
I ordered some of these books for the library I work at; also, I really, really want to read both GOLIATH and THE SEA OF TRANQUILITY!

I hope we both get to read them:-)
I have some of these on my wish list, but others? I need to check out as they’re new to me.
There are just so many books coming out next year, lol.
I’ve already preordered the Kaiju book! I’ll read anything by Scalzi, and this sounds so good. I’m looking forward to Sea o f Tranquility too, and need to finally read A History of What Comes next so I’ll be ready for the sequel. So much to look forward to!
Kaiju sounds like it’s much different from Scalzi’s usual, I’m so curious.
I’m really excited for so many of these! I’ve had a copy of The Paradox Hotel for a little while that I’d been trying to hold onto until closer to January to read, but I think I might just have to read it early!
If I had time I would read it early too:-)
As always, your lists destroy my TBR lol.
I applied for the ARC of Hunt the Stars, so fingers crossed! Until the Last of Me, Sea of Tranquility, and A Half-Built Garden sound incredible!
Ha ha so sorry:-) Good luck with Hunt the Stars!
I’ve got my eye on The Paradox Hotel. Like you said, how can you not want to read that?!

It sounds crazy but good crazy!
I can’t wait to read The Paradox Hotel and The Kaiju Preservation Society. Great picks!
Thanks Lauren!
I have Hunt for the Stars ARC and am excited for it. Tor newsletter was giving away a free download of the first Sylvain Neuvel book today so I got that.
Hunt the Stars is going to be good, I just love Jessie Mihalik:-)
Battle of the Linguist Mages sounds interesting!
Doesn’t it? I’m so curious.
Hunt the Stars really appeals to me and your post reminds me that I still need to read Sisters of the Vast Black. I still remember your excellent review of that book. 🙂
It was so good, definitely try to read it!
Hope you enjoy these when they come out!
Thanks Stormi!
Sister of the Forsaken Stars is a top pick for me, I loved sisters so much. And a time travel murder mystery? Dangggg…
Preservation sounds fabulous, and so does the new Mihalik.

I know, which one do we read first, they all sound good, lol.
I really wish I’d gotten to read Doors of Sleep earlier this year! Oh well maybe it’s not too late!
Definitely try to read it, it’s one of those books that just makes you happy:-)
Oh yeah the cover of the linguist mages gives me sci-fi vibes for sure. Which might be why I requested it haha.
Hope we both love it!
‘this is Emily St. John Mandel, and I will read anything she writes.’ – ditto this. Her books are so very different and I love them so far.
Lynn 😀
Yes! She’s fantastic, and I love that her books are so different from each other.
I got a review copy of Deep Dive via NetGalley, and I’m really looking forward to The Paradox Hotel and Prison of Sleep (I read Book 1 in the series). Mickey 7 sounds so unique!

I hope we both love all of these:-)
The Kaiju Preservation Society sounds so good! I loved Redshirts by John Scalzi so I’m excited to see how he tackles kaiju 🙂
Me too, I’m excited for it!
I’m much more keen on fantasy than scifi – but I had to check out this post cos I love to look at scifi covers. I love the blue tentacles on Prison of Sleep! And admittedly Battle of the Linguist Mages sounds like something I might actually enjoy…

I feel like Battle of the Linguist Mages might combine fantasy and SF:-)
How many interesting titles!! I need Battle of the Linguist Mages just for the title!! And you mentioned a couple of series I should continue/start. I have read the first of Mihalik series and really enjoyed it, and I have yet to read Sisters of thr Vast Black, but it is on my TBR! I hope to read them all soon!
The first two look really good, and I need to read a John Scalzi book, they always sound so good! Thanks for sharing!
